Miami-Dade County Schools Superintendent, Alberto Carvalho, announced on Facebook that he will give back to students by using the $10,000 he earned as national Superintendent of the year, in addition to his own personal impute of $10,000, to “honor [ten] students whose paths have been both difficult but also inspirational” with college scholarships.
The ten students, who will each receive $2,000, are part of Project Up-Start, a project established in 1992 that helps homeless students get the supplies and tools they need throughout the year; they are also students that have graduated at the top of their class.
Students part of Project Up-Start are allowed to go to a store administrated by the organization located in the Miami Dade County School Administration building to shop at no cost.
Carvalho gave out the scholarships today and said the gesture was significant for him because there was a time period when he was homeless.
