Senior Brunch is one of the many special and unique moments that Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) students get to experience during their senior year of high school. Every year, students get together one last time before graduation and prom to celebrate and have fun.
“Senior Brunch is a milestone, it marks the beginning of the end of senior year, one big step closer to graduation,” said Mrs. Helena Castro, the activities director and the class of 2020 sponsor.
This year, the event was held at the Rusty Pelican, a stylish diner in Key Biscayne where Senior Brunch has been held for the past few years. The theme was Bora Bora. There were flower necklaces, colorful balloons, dancing, food, and good energy all around. It was evident that a lot of time, love, and energy was put into preparing the event—the senior class officers are a testimony of it.
“Preparing for Senior Brunch wasn’t easy and took a lot of patience and teamwork,” said Natalia Reboredo, class of 2020 President.
However, all the effort was worth it because from the moment MLEC students stepped into Rusty Pelican, their steps marked the beginning of one of their most sacred high school memories.
Senior Brunch gives students an opportunity to reminisce on all the memories they made during the past four years at MLEC, and it gives them an opportunity to create new ones. It is an event to have a good time with the friendly faces they grew up with, the individuals who they have seen almost every day inside a classroom and in the hallways.
“Overall, our hard work paid off and we are really happy to see that everyone enjoyed their time at Senior Brunch,” said Yasmine Mezawi, class of 2020 Vice President. “It sets a good mood for the rest of the events to come,” she continued.
Not only is Senior Brunch a fun time for students, but also for teachers. Some of the teachers and administrators who attended were Ms. Charlessette Chavis, part of the Language Arts Faculty at MLEC, who did the “wobble” with the senior class, Mrs. Neyda Borges, the English Department Chair, and our new school principal, Mr. Yaset Fernandez.
There was also a very special performance by MLEC’s very own Soundcloud rapper, “Lil’ Vulx” (Malique Lewis), who just recently released a new song and has made many appearances at school events—it was only fitting that he sang at Senior Brunch and performed to his class.
But besides eating, dancing, and listening to performances, one particular part of Senior Brunch that students always look forward to is the moment where class superlatives are announced.
At Senior Brunch, students can vote on who they want to win in every category—from “best dressed” to “most likely to be successful”—and the names are later announced at the Brunch. It’s a good time to reflect on the best moments they had together in high school—and of course, class of 2020 was really looking forward to the Superlatives announcements.

Overall, this year’s Senior Brunch was a blast for students and teachers. They got to break their usual routine of going to school and doing work. Instead, they got to make one of the most important memories of their student lives.
Senior Brunch is an event to remember.
