Expectations for the 2019-2020 School Year

Expectations for the 2019-2020 School Year

By Jaylyn Gonzalez

After a ten-week-long break, incoming and returning Jaguars will soon be walking into the hallways of MLEC with the curiosity of what to expect in the new school year.

Numerous extracurricular activities, clubs, and events await all students as they occur all throughout the school year. Spirit week, class trips, homecoming, and school dances are the events (just to name a few) that make all of the stressful aspects of the school year worthwhile.

Freshman

Incoming freshmen should not be intimidated by upperclassmen. Instead, they should be open to making new friends at MLEC as it is home to a friendly and open environment where everyone is always willing to help one another.

Freshmen should also look forward to creating new opportunities such as attending our annual Club Rush event.

At Club Rush, many of the school’s clubs will be setting up stands in the gymnasium and representatives of each club will be there ready to answer any and all of your questions. These clubs include Key Club, SHAPE, Junior State of America, Equal Rights Alliance, 5000 Role Models, and many more. This event is certainly a great way for them to get a headstart in finding their favored interest to partake in after-school.

Sophomores

Freshman year is over!

As incoming sophomores, they will be undoubtedly excited to celebrate their transition and can now look back to say they lived through a part of the High School experience and the beginning of its many hurdles.

Truth is, as sophomores, they are still underclassmen. This time around though, they should expect that there will be freshmen looking up to them. This means that they hold a little more responsibility to lend a helping hand to the new kids who don’t know how to get from the Gym to Building three.

Sophomores should think back to how freshman year was for them and remember how someone else lent them a helping hand — and if nobody lent them a hand in their freshman year, maybe they will take this opportunity to become the upperclassmen that do.

Juniors

Juniors have entered the roaming world of being an upperclassman but, this comes with a price. In sophomore year, they heard a lot of “college talk”. However, it’s during junior year that the talk gets serious.

Juniors are expected to take their SAT’s and ACT’s as well as think more about what route they want to take when it comes to college and their future after high school. But, after the first half of the school year is over, juniors still get to experience all of the fun activities in store for them.

This year is marked by the tradition of the annual Junior Ring Ceremony—which marks the transition from being an underclassman to being an upperclassman. They can also participate in their class trip to Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay, Florida.

Seniors

Walking in victorious into school campus with a crown on their head, seniors are more than ready to claim the throne of the school. Seniors are also expecting a handful of events coming their way. But, before they can even think about senioritis and their fun events, there are still things to do.

The beginning of senior year is marked with college applications, college essays, scholarship applications, financial aid applications, and many more such applications that seniors will find themselves overwhelmed. But, the following events make all of this stress worthwhile: Senior Crowning, Senior Social, Senior Brunch, GradBash, Prom— and finally Graduation.

With the rest of the school year still ahead of all of us, we should make sure to take advantage of this new academic year to work hard and to take up all of the opportunities available to us—and remember, there are still various fun activities that await.

Don’t forget to keep up with the #MLECWelcomeBack on Twitter on the first day of school to see all of your classmates and their thoughts of the upcoming school year.
