Military Scientists Develop a Pizza That Will Last For Three Years For Soldiers by Chloe Baldino

Due to the overwhelming demand from soldiers overseas, there have been great improvements in the development of a pizza that will last up to three years. Not only will it last long, it will remain edible through its lifespan without the need for refrigeration or cooking.

Considered the “holy grail” of meals ready to eat (MRE), the development of the pizza has been, year after year, among the highest demands of the soldiers.

“It pretty much tastes just like a typical pan pizza that you would make at home and take out of the oven or the toaster oven,” Jill Bates, who runs the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center in Natick, Massachusetts, told the AP. “The only thing missing from that experience would be it’s not hot when you eat it. It’s room temperature.”

The development of the army-proof pizza has gone through a lot of trials since previous efforts to create it failed due to the high moisture inherent in the ingredients that make it hard to keep the pizza dry. In order to solve this, the scientists added ingredients that limit water absorption.

David Accetta, a former Army lieutenant colonel, said in a report through Newsfeed, that it will “…lift up the soldiers spirits on the battlefield, [and] in a lot of cases, when you are cold and tired and hungry, having a hot meal that’s something that you like and you would get at home, it increases your morale — and we consider that to be a force multiplier.”
