What To Expect: Oscars 2019

By Abigail Rosales

Jaw dropping dresses draping the red carpet, journalists fishing for quick interviews and all of the Hollywood elite applauding: All will be present at the 91st Annual Oscars. As usual, the nominees for the many categories were all picked carefully in order for the best of the best to have a chance to win an Oscar. Although being an Oscar nominee is already great recognition for these movies, actors/actresses, and production it is an honor to win the Academy Award.

Roma and The Favourite lead in the most nominations this year, with 10 nods each against the other films. An “Oscar nod” means being recognized by the Oscar committee, therefore being nominated by them. Other films such as, Black Panther (seven nods), BlacKkKlansman (six nods), and Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book (five nods) follow after with leading nods in other nominations. A Star Is Born and Vice are other films that steal the Oscar stage this year, which are also nominated with eight nods each.

Black Panther is now the first superhero film that is in the running for best picture, and it has been said to be one of the most outstanding achievements in popular film. Action and comedy movies have been less appreciated over the years, therefore Black Panther being nominated for one of the most prestigious categories proves it’s high performance.

Not only is Black Panther making a name for itself, but so is the outstanding film, Roma. Oscar voters are naming the film one of the best movies of 2018. Roma is one of the couple of Netflix original movies being nominated, with 10 film nominations overall. Netflix as a whole is now ranking up their movies to a higher pedestal and achieving much more than ever thought of.

The Oscars will be taking place at the Dolby Theater at Hollywood and Highland Center in the infamous city itself that ignites the bright future for all movies, Hollywood. Grab a bag of popcorn and stay tuned on February 24th, 2019 as the award show unravels.
