The 14 Greatest Love Songs for February 14th

By Aileen Delgado

From the smooth heartwarming tunes of 20th century Frank Sinatra, to the spellbinding melody of any Ed Sheeran song today, each of these songs tell a tale we are all familiar with––the twists and turns of a journey called love.

These decades worth of symphonies have followed us through the passage of time, and continue to bring us together through their everlasting passion. Here are the 14 greatest love songs that will forever remain ageless:

  1. “I’m Yours”- Jason Mraz

The simple yet endearing song was the young artist’s first ever single, which became an original hit for the 21st century. The song itself speaks of not only giving your all to a certain someone, but wanting to share all of your own love and time with them.

Mraz himself explained that this song is “about finally giving into love and life’s possibilities.”

People are drawn to the pure vibe of joy and generosity each lyric exudes.

  1. “Make You Feel My Love”- Bob Dylan

The beautiful work of art came to be in 1998, and evolved as a remarkable balance between both its music and lyrics. It was originally written by Dylan, however it was previously released by Billy Joel earlier in that same year. There have been several covered versions of the famous tune from artists such as Adele, Kelly Clarkson, and Garth Brooks.

The song is a warm reminder for our loved ones, or simply the ones who feel like home to us, that our love for them will always be unconditional.

  1. “Thinking Out Loud”- Ed Sheeran

This tear-jerking song swooned many of us overnight as its tender lyrics and perfectly orchestrated sounds gave new meaning to true and devoted love. Ed Sheeran is known for his gentle spirit and compassionate musical style. However, many recognize this piece as one of the most wholehearted pieces the artist has ever written.

We dedicate this song to the ones we want to grow weak with, although our love will never do so. “Thinking Out Loud” has not only become the go-to wedding song for many newlyweds, but also the overall anthem of love songs for this generation.

  1. “Chasing Cars”- Snow Patrol

Snow Patrol’s widely known single took many of our breaths away with its pure and heartfelt meaning. It refers to a love that cannot simply be expressed through words. It is only you and your lover, and every other part of the world fades away. This is a person who makes us forget all worries and troubles, and just helps us live in the moment while it lasts.

  1. “Just The Way You Are”- Bruno Mars

Being loved for who we are as people is all we could ever want in an ideal relationship. In this song, Mars points out the tiniest characteristics that make up a person’s own unique personality. He makes it clear in every verse that we each deserve someone who recognizes every aspect of ourselves and loves every single one of them, even if we don’t.

Although it may seem basic and straightforward in its message, it holds all significance when it comes to sincere love for someone.

  1. “If I Ain’t Got You”- Alicia Keys

Many people in this world go through their lives in search of fame, luxury, or wealth. We have all been held accountable of our own materialistic or possessive sides.

However, this song devalues every one of these fortunes by stating their lack of importance. It reminds us that to enjoy a life full of hope and genuine happiness, love is truly all we need.

  1. “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You”- Frankie Valli

Released in the mid-1900s, the great passionate love song is one we share with those we can’t seem to hide our undying emotions for. It was made for a man who is just exuberantly in love, and can’t help but show it.

Each chorus and verse slowly builds up to a burning intensity––the same feeling we get for someone we are madly in love with. It is almost as if our heart is speaking for itself. It is one of Valli’s biggest solo hits, and continues to be shared among every loving couple to this day.

  1. “Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words)”- Frank Sinatra

The master of the jazz and pop blend himself created the popular hit in the early 1950s, which has been sang by almost every soul still existing in the world. The poetic verses and developing chorus explains a love that is almost out of this world.

Each melody sounds almost as if one was in a dream. The wondrous symphony is one we hum to ourselves quite often, thinking of those who make us feel this special way.

  1. “How Deep is Your Love”- Bee Gees

Being in a romantic relationship means trust, loyalty, showing compassion for one another, and so much more. The famous pop/disco trio brought us this song to show us that love can mean much more than we make it out to be.

The song also speaks of how no one can break through the great power of love itself, and how nothing can come in between a true relationship. In a world full of chaos and evil, love can be the only thing that gives us hope and keeps us alive.

  1. “Put Your Head On My Shoulder”- Paul Anka

The ’50s heartthrob singer wrote the hit only two years after his career skyrocketed, and it resulted in ultimate success. The song itself mainly refers to infatuation, or simply loving someone at that very moment. Anka does a great job in conveying the rushing passion one gets when they’re in love with someone.

Many have even interpreted it as if it were telling of a hopelessly romantic guy chasing a girl, but they may not want a committed relationship just yet or may not even feel the same way. However, the guy still wants her to at least put her head on his shoulder, even if it’s for a little while.

  1. “Endless Love”- Lionel Richie & Diana Ross

The heartwarming solo holds upmost sentimentality within the lyrics and instrumental chords. In the song, the two singers express their “endless love” for one another.

The ballad has been covered by several artists throughout the years, including soul artist Luther Vandross and famous R&B singer Mariah Carey. It is known to be the song with the most original lyrics ever written. The love song was one of the most popular within the ’80s era, and continues to be one of the most popular today.

  1. I Will Always Love you”- Whitney Houston

Many don’t know that the worldwide anthem was originally written and released by well-known country singer Dolly Parton in 1974, and then covered by Houston in 1992. Her cover became one of the best-selling singles of all time, and topped Billboard charts for a total of 14 consecutive weeks.

The song’s original meaning told the story of someone who was parting from a certain situation or relationship, but still appreciated and loved the experience they had to go through in order to get to where they are today. This can mean breakups, divorces, or even growing apart from a friend we will just always love.

  1. Can’t Help Falling In Love”- Elvis Presley

This late ’60s universal ballad takes us on a journey through its acoustic sounds and meaningful lyrics. Many of us go through rushed relationships that only last a certain length of time, but that also teach us that love is not something that can be forced upon ourselves.

When we meet our lifelong soulmate, everything in our lives fall into place. The song does a great job in stating that what is meant to be will eventually be.

1. “Careless Whisper”- George Michael

The famous 80’s pop and soul artist wrote the song in honor of his own romantic moments as a careless adolescent. Michael had two major crushes he was dying to swoon––something many high school teenage boys can relate to.

The lyrics themselves came to Michael’s mind when each girl found out about the other and their affair with the smitten boy. The song itself admits the guilt and sorrow for one’s unintentional mistakes, and fits as an apology for the wrongdoings.

The mesmerizing orchestrated rhythm and perfectly fitted lyrics turns this piece into the most astonishing love song of all time. It is one we fall in love with a little more every time its heard.
