Can New Year’s Resolutions Be Kept?

By Carla Rubio

New Year’s has come and passed; 2018 is now a thing of the past. Now comes the time where people all over the globe struggle to actually keep their New Year’s resolutions. The phrase “New year, new me” is a goal–and, for most, a fantasy.

People always try to change something, whether it be their looks, diets, or exercise. This resolution is usually something to look forward to coming into 2019.

Yet, according to U.S News, 80% of resolutions fail by the second week of February. So, the odds aren’t really in your favor from the start.

The problem is that there is no motivation, no inspiration, no commitment when it comes to these goals. There is nothing to look forward to after you reach your result. In addition, we tend to set unrealistic goals, impractical from the start.

Another problem with a New Year’s resolution is that the timing is completely preposterous. No matter what your goal is, why wait until New Year’s to set the goal? You have 364 other days to set goals for yourself.

There are some reasonable ways to complete your goals during this time of the year. Be confident in your resolution, don’t be impractical. Secondly, try to organize yourself. Don’t lose focus in what you’re trying to accomplish if you’re serious about it.

Also try to make this experience fun for yourself. If that means having a friend do the same, then do it.

Just remember that real goals are with us every day, not only on New Year’s. Set your personal resolutions on your time.
