Grey’s Anatomy 15th Season Premiere Review & Recap

By Carla Rubio

This Thursday, one of ABC’s top-rated shows, Grey’s Anatomy, aired it’s 2 hour 15th season premiere.

With about 9 million views per season, this medical show is made up of about 300 episodes filled with insane medical cases, a variety of different characters, and so much binge-worthy drama. Initially airing on May 25th, 2005, the show has won 5 Emmys, 2 Golden Globe Awards, and 10 People’s Choice Awards.

Shonda Rhimes, the creator and writer of Grey’s Anatomy, is very well known for her amazing plot twists that include the tragic deaths of some fan-favorite characters as well as surprising romantic relationships. These plot twists keep fans on their toes, as a result a spoiler alert is advised!

This racially diverse series introduces an assortment of character backgrounds and developments. The show centers around Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and her colleagues at a Seattle hospital, currently named Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. The doctors struggle to maintain a work life and a social life and very often mix the two.

Other noteworthy characters are Dr.Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson)–the chief of the hospital and Dr.Alex Karev (Justin Chambers)– Meredith’s best friend.

We’re in for a “season of love” says show co-writer Krista Vernoff as she thanks loyal fans for the show’s journey and talks about about ABC’s record-breaking season 15, making it the longest TV drama in ABC’s history.

Right off the bat of the premiere episode we catch a glimpse of all of the characters after last season’s wedding that took place in the finale episode.

Dr.Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), Dr.Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) and Dr.Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) experience a near-death incident when DeLuca pulls Avery and Pierce out of the way as a woman passes out behind the wheel and runs over a biker at full speed. Later on in the episode, the biker dies causing Avery to contemplate his existence and have an anxiety attack.

One of the show’s early season regulars, Kim Raver as Dr.Teddy Altman, was announced as a returning character after her appearance in the finale cliffhanger that showed that Altman was pregnant. During this episode, she attempts to hide her return to Seattle, not wanting anyone to find out about her pregnancy.

Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) finds aerosol hair spray in a patient’s prostate and during surgery it explodes, injuring one of the interns while finally resolving one of this episode’s medical mysteries. Meanwhile, Dr. Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) and Dr. Alex Karev make breakthrough realization about an idea for killing cancer cells, winning them a fellowship and ending their honeymoon vacation.

Despite ongoing drama with current characters, we were also introduced to two new ones: orthopedic surgeons Dr. Atticus Lincoln (Chris Carmack) and Dr.Nico Kim (Alex Landi). While paving the way for two new characters, two characters left, therefore continuing the shows reputation for controversial exits. We will no longer be seeing Sarah Drew play Dr. April Kepner and Jessica Capshaw as Dr. Arizona Robbins which resulted in backlash towards Pompeo due to rumors that her new contract made it too expensive to keep the fan-favorite characters.

“Thanks to fiercely loyal fans who have been on this journey since the beginning, and new generations of viewers who continue to discover the joy and drama of Grey Sloan Memorial, the show is as strong as ever” said Channing Dungey, president of ABC entertainment.
