The Purge Movie Review

By Abigail Rosales

This past July Fourth, one of the most iconic movie series in American film came out with their, what is assumed to be, final film. The Purge is a movie series that includes a total of four movies and the most recent addition that has been released in movie theaters around the nation is: The First Purge.

In this Purge movie, producers and director James DeMonaco, decided to give fans an insight to what the first ever Purge was actually like—the beginning of it all. It was just seen as an experiment and it was just that, in hopes that it can solve the nation’s anger problem and other casualties the nation seems to face. Like the previous three Purge movies, they followed the main character throughout the night and faced all the deranged activities that followed them throughout.

However, this movie in particular had a certain angle that was seen in a different light by the audience, maybe it was the heart wrenching idea of a low income community being used as guinea pigs and suffering, or the feeling of how surreal the movie was. At the rate our country is going many feel like this Purge movie is a real and perfect example of what can potentially happen if the nation reaches an ultimate crisis of overpopulation and government dependency.

Although this movie is supposed to fall under the horror genre many believe it is seen as a thriller based on the previous Purge movies, that were never really seen as frightening. However, many are saying that with this new movie, it is actually “surprisingly powerful and hard to watch,” and “terrifying”.

Sitting in a theater and watching the movie was satisfying with an amazing plot and insight into different viewpoints. It kept the audience at the edge of their seats waiting for the next sudden attack to strike, and then jumping in their seat when the attack did strike. The First Purge was an overall amazing film that the cast and crew clearly put in an effort to bring it to life. It certainly felt real, let’s hope it doesn’t actually happen.
