What to do During a Rainy Memorial Day Weekend

By Yasmine Mezawi

Memorial Day is a federal holiday to commemorate those who served in active military services. Families of lost ones, and citizens nationally honor hundreds of soldiers who sacrificed their lives, to protect those at home. Some may use this day to visit graves of their loved ones, or celebrate those alive, or as an extra day off from work to seize for vacation.

With the approach of a tropical storm bringing a never-ending downpour to Miami, the sun doesn’t seem to be in the weekend’s forecast, and most vacation plans may go awry. However, there’s various ways one could still enjoy their weekend while keeping dry.

Catch up to the viral memes by grabbing some popcorn, and enjoying a day at the movies with friends. With the back-to-back releases of Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, and Solo: A Star Wars Story, spoilers (without context) are taking over Twitter, and if you haven’t seen the movies, then you’re probably lost. If you have any other movies on your “need to watch” list, there’s no time like the present.

Really late spring cleaning is another option—it always seem that we lose time either with work, or the non-stop plans with friends. If you still haven’t found the time throw out unnecessary item,s or to detox yourself, then it’s time to get to it.

Put away those useless materials, or get rid of items that hold unfavorable memories. Relax at home with a face mask, your favorite Netflix show, or clean the mess that you’ve been avoiding for way too long.

Food, food, and more food. One could never go wrong with cooking a homemade meal. Taco Bell, and Chick-Fil-A may be calling your name, but nothing’s better than knowing cooking a delicious feast, and being able to savor it in the comforts of home rather than in your car, on your route to work. Maybe even invite some friends over to help, and enjoy some company with the ones who have you feeling content.

But if you can’t cook, then hop in the car, and try out those new restaurants that seem to be flooding your feed with raving reviews. A perk of living in Miami is the unique ambiance of restaurants either in one’s neighborhood, or downtown in the inner city.

If you still seem to find yourself wondering what to do, then visit the variety of museums that Miami offers—from the Perez Art Museum to the Children’s Miami Museum. Groups of friends can also venture out to enjoy a day full of bowling, mini golfing, or laser tagging.

The rain shouldn’t hold one back from a weekend full of fun and memories. The beach and pool may sound nice, but there’s more to do this Memorial Day weekend.
