On February 14th, 17 students and faculty were killed in the heinous act at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
As a sign to show the victims that they’re not alone, Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) decided to honor their lives rather than forget the crime. On Wednesday, a week after the shooting, Jaguars decided to tie orange ribbons on their school gate, facing 57th Street, in hopes of not only gaining attention but to show our condolences to the families and friends affected.

The idea behind this event came from the students themselves. Many felt strongly about the topic and wanted to show their support. They knew it was an event that didn’t affect just the Douglas students but them as well.

“We stand together amongst the classmates at Douglas and nationwide to such tragedy. The message behind this was #NeverAgain in hopes to bring awareness that we need change, and that we need it now, that we must stand together to bring about change to avoid another tragedy like this,” said Alejandra Velasquez, SGA Vice President.

“Tying ribbons on the fence allowed us to honor those victims of the Parkland shooting. I wanted to send a message: you are not alone, and you never will be. Together, we will take a stand and make a difference,” said Natasha Fernandez, SGA President.
Amongst several other schools—including Barbara Goleman High, American Senior High, and Hialeah High—students participated in walkouts at noon, with banners and chants to showcase their belief in a gun ban or stricter gun laws.
As a student body, we are here to make a statement. As a student body, we are here for change. As a student body, we stand with Douglas.
“We don’t want want to see any of our classmates hurt. #NeverAgain,” said Fernandez.
