Parkland students to march on the Capitol this week to demand change to gun laws

On Tuesday, February 20th, 100 students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High will be traveling to Tallahassee and they will have their first protest of their #NeverAgain movement. The students are demanding that Florida legislators use the rest of the annual session to change state mental health and gun laws to prevent any more school shootings.

Jaclyn Corin, 17, who created the idea for the two-day trip, said she and her classmates want the state to ban all assault weapons. “They also want to make it more difficult for those with histories of mental illness to legally access weapons.”

“We emphasize the need for more attention to mental health. We know a lot of people, and politicians, would prefer that over gun control, but we want to emphasize both,” Corin said. “We don’t want to take away people’s gun rights. This movement understands that people have that right under the Second Amendment, but we just want alterations and restriction.”

Jaclyn and her classmates are only asking for restriction; they aren’t asking to ban the peoples’ right. Restrictions are needed in order to prevent another shooting.
