Spirit Week 2017 Recap

Spirit Week 2017 Recap

By Rozany Guzman and Daylin Delgado

It was the hoarse voices of every spirited student, the roars of joy of the winners of the tug-of-war, the explosion of pink, red, purple and blue in the gymnasium that let the world know Miami Lakes Educational Center’s Spirit Week had officially begun with the celebration of the Homecoming Pep Rally.

The Homecoming Pep Rally was an opportunity for every class to show their unity and pride through face paint, pom-poms, and uncontrollable cheers as they went head-to-head with other classes and supported their classmates in the spectacular performances. However, the real fun was yet to come.

On Monday morning, the halls were full of teenagers crouching over canes, peering over thin rimmed glasses, and complaining about the noise high school students are always making for Senior Citizen Day. Students took that day to call everyone ‘whipper-snappers’ and to scowl disapprovingly at their friends to tease them. Many of the resident seniors were surprisingly nimble and energetic for their apparent age.

The following day, the population whipped out their Hawaiian shirts, bermuda shorts, and disposable cameras. The halls popped with greens, oranges, yellows, and blues, and the confused tourists bumped into each other while trying to find their way around the campus. Friends gravitated towards each other and took pics of one another in their binoculars and fanny packs.

On Wednesday, dozens of Supermans, Batmans and Captain Americas strided through the campus in all of their heroic glory as villains lurked in the shadows waiting to strike. One pair of sophomores showed even a princess and a beast could be heroes, and stole the hearts of the student body in their recreation of the Disney couple.

Thursday was by far the funniest day with everyone spending the day in fits of laughter as their classmates all dressed up as their favorite memes. Arthurs had their fists clenched, salt baes spread salt everywhere they went, and a friendly dinosaur roamed the halls.

The Spirit Week themes ended with Decades Day on Friday. Every decade was represented, from the ‘20s all the way to the ‘90s. Tie dye shirts, suspenders, flapper dresses, bandanas and leather jackets–they were all present as the MLEC student body rocked iconic styles.

During lunch, in front of Building C, Ms. Castro took the microphone and congratulated each class for their hard work and dedication throughout the Hallway Competition. She gave a special shoutout to the juniors for their tremendous work and for earning the spot as runner-up. There was a pause before she announced this year’s winners: Class of 2018 Seniors.

The festive week came to a conclusion on Friday night for the long-awaited Homecoming. Students crowded the ballroom of the Hilton Hotel and admired the stunning decorations specifically for the classic 1920s-style Gatsby theme. There they announced the Homecoming Court winners:

This year’s Spirit Week was a success and distracted everyone from everyday stress, and brought a dollop of fun and memories for the students to keep for years to come.
