The Miami Lakes Educational Center student body had been sitting on pins and needles waiting for the Pep Rally to begin, a mix of many different emotions. Seniors sadly waited to experience their last rally in MLEC and the freshmen excited to witness their first rally yet terrified of MLEC’s tradition: to boo the freshmen.
Class of 2021 president, freshman Maria Martinez, expressed her thoughts on her first pep rally with much enthusiasm, “This is gonna be so much fun. It’s going to be so exciting. This is my first pep rally in high school. I’ve seen them in the movies. I hope we don’t get booed! But we’re gonna be super loud. I’m gonna be screaming at the top of my lungs.”

Once the announcement was given, a sea of pink, red, purple, and blue flowed to the gymnasium and the dashed to get the closest seats to the front. Soon enough, the classes were all divided: the pink seniors, the red juniors, the purple sophomores, and the blue freshmen.

The Pep Rally started off by a stunning performance from our cheerleaders, the Jaguettes. Oohs and aahs erupted from the crowd with every flip and twirl as they lifted everyone’s spirits up. Once the Jaguettes cleared the floor, the Kit-Kats filled the space and began their dance routine, their hips rocking to the beat and their hands emphasizing their movements. Their happy spirit had everyone dancing along to the beat. It was all fun and games, up until the games began.

In this MLEC tradition, the classes all try to ride, jump, crawl, and tug their way to victory to be claimed the winners. This year, the seniors won all the games and were claimed the champions.
This Pep Rally was a perfect kick-off to Spirit Week, hyping up the student body and preparing everyone for the fun next Monday. But none of this would have happened if not for the SGA officers.
SGA president, Natasha Fernandez, told us about planning this year’s Pep Rally, “Planning the Pep Rally is a lot. It can be stressful at times but it’s really fun. You know, with the games, the performances, and getting everything in order. And getting all the classes together.”

During the Pep Rally, you could see the SGA officers running around, making sure everything was in order and going just as planned. They included the traditions: tug-of-war, tricycle and sack race, as well as the wheelbarrow race. However, they did change an old tradition: they moved the Homecoming Pep Rally to the Friday before Spirit Week.
Since forever, the Homecoming Pep Rally was always at the end of Spirit Week and there the SGA officers would announce the winner of the hallway competition, where each individual class works together to decorate one of the halls of the second floor in fifth building. This year, it was before and gave more attention to the games and performances.

SGA sponsor, Mr. John Moffi, told us why, “In years past the pep rally ended spirit week. This year we decided, to really drive school spirit, by kicking off spirit week with pep rally. From this you get all these great events next week. We have hallway competition, spirit week.”

This did exactly that, after screaming to the top of their lungs, students left home with smiles on their faces and memories to store, hyped and ready for next week’s activities.
