“A Recap of Last Night’s V.M.A.s”

By Luis Mila

MTV’s Video Music Awards was one of the most tweeted about events in the past four years. The show featured performances from some of America’s favorite artists, tear-jerking moments, and of course, the handing out of plenty of awards.

Performed by major rapper, Logic, the song “1-800-273-8255,” featured on his third album, “Everybody,” was a major crowd tear inducer, with the title of the song happening to be the suicide hotline phone number. Not only was it a service, but it served as truly a moving piece, performed at the V.M.A.s, featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid.

The song opens with someone calling the hotline, claiming they “don’t want to be alive.” On the other end of the line – the second verse – offers emotional support to this individual. To conclude this passionate song, the caller continues to convince themselves on the line that they don’t want to feel this way. In fact, they are tired of the isolation and tears, and at this point just want to move on. Another artist, Kesha, had claimed that the whole performance had even caused her to cry.

Onto awards, many of America’s favorite artists got to take home a trophy of recognition for all of their hard work. Kendrick Lamar had been awarded for Video Of The Year, a well deserved prize for his hit single, “Humble”. Fifth Harmony (despite dragging previous member, Camila Cabello) also took home an award for Best Pop Video, in honor of their song “Down.”

P!nk was the VMAs 2017 Video Vanguard Recipient, an award given to artists to recognize their accomplishments and contributions in both music and film.

Other celebrities were also notable based on their attire alone. Young pop star, Shawn Mendes, won best dressed. People also took a liking to Cardi B’s skin tight gown, with fluffy cuffs, and a trail, and even Demi Lovato’s revealing jumpsuit, a piece with black sparkles, and lace.

One of the music industry’s more unique artists, Lorde, was under the weather with a flu virus, a very serious infection, tweeting, “you can’t tell in these pictures but i have the flu so bad I needed an IV”. She still managed to kick off a spectacular performance at the V.M.A.s. The pop star didn’t even attempt singing during the performance but that didn’t stop the crowd from chanting lyrics, dancing, and even becoming entranced by her perplex dance moves. Lorde’s performance even featured a drop to the floor, getting picked up by her fellow performers, and drifting off in perfect formation.

Fans and other critics state the performance was definitely memorable, but for reasons far from good. Reviews through twitter and Billboard made it clear that the whole act was “underwhelming”, and “odd.” However, judging from Lorde’s health status, it’s amazing she even performed at all.

At the end of the day, amazing performances were held, artists were recognized, and cheers overtook the venue.
