‘I’m Not Afraid.’ 500,000 Barcelona Peace Marchers Take the Streets of Spain

On August 26, 2017 hundreds of thousands of marchers filled the streets of Barcelona to the brim, peacefully shouting a powerful statement, “I’m not afraid” – a public act of rejection against the August 17th terrorist attack in the famed Las Ramblas boulevard.

Those who led the march were the very emergency workers, taxi drivers, policemen, and ordinary citizens who helped after the attack. They led the way for the 500,000 peace marchers holding a street-wide banner reading “No tinc Por” which translates to “I’m not afraid” in their native Catalan language.

It’s not the first time an event like this occurs in Barcelona. The country has recently surpassed one of their biggest terrorist attacks in about a decade, responding with defiance to the outcome all terrorists wish from their victims.

They united together and made their message clear to the world and their enemies: They were not afraid. A terrorists method to success is to spread fear: a huge weakness in human nature.

The attempted attack was targeted in a famous boulevard where many tourists visit, hitting home to many Spaniard residents, similar to the 9/11 attacks in New York.

In a then initially uneventful morning in New York, two planes unsuspectingly hit the twin towers, taking both buildings down and killing thousands. The American people took their time in mourning over the loss of so many people, yet came back stronger. They weren’t discouraged over a terrorist attack, and neither is Barcelona.
