A Recap of MLEC’s Spirit Week and Homecoming Dance

A Recap of MLEC’s Spirit Week and Homecoming Dance

By Juanita Cardona

For many students, Homecoming week is the most exciting week of the year— for a whole week, students get to dress up and skip out on uniform to show off their school spirit.

This year, Homecoming week at Miami Lakes Educational Center started off with Twin Day. Best friends, siblings, and even school faculty matched outfits with one another.

On Tuesday, we found out who really ruled the school with GeekSquad vs JocksSquad day. Walking through the halls of MLEC, you could see some in plaid shirts, khakis, and suspenders and others in varsity jackets and sneakers.

Battle of the Characters was Wednesday as students dressed up in their favorite superhero or villain. Some went all out with their Superman capes and Black Panther outfits.

The day with most spirit and student participation was on Thursday: Decade Day. Every single decade was represented, from the 70’s to the 90’s. Tie-dye shirts and circular glasses, white shirts with leather jackets, and even Hairspray inspired outfits took over the school.

Color War happened on Friday, the last day of Spirit Week, as the first pep rally of the school year was hosted in the gym that day. The seniors, Class of 2017, won the hallway competition victory for the second year in a row, while the tug of war was called into a draw between the freshmen and seniors.

However, for most, Spirit Week didn’t end there as the Homecoming dance took place later on that night. Students went home to dress in their best dresses and suits for A Starlit Night at the Hilton Miami Airport Hotel.

Once there, they posed left and right for pictures and created memories to remember. Dinner was served shortly after everyone sat down but it wasn’t until after that the real party started. Everyone rushed to the dance floor as music started blasting from speakers and MLEC Jaguars of all grades began showing off their moves to Rihanna and Drake.

After announcing the Homecoming Court— for which Keith Thorton and Laura Lumbre won Mr. and Ms. MLEC, Armani Campbell and Amanda Trujillo won Homecoming King and Queen, Devry Russell and Yeniyah Flint won Prince and Princess, Antevia Legett won Duchess and Jada Souvenir won Lady— the entire Homecoming posed for the #mannequinchallenge.

The dancing continued as “Wobble Baby” and “Single Ladies” played, bringing everyone to their feet once again. A range of music was played from bachata to pop giving everyone the opportunity to dance and enjoy the night.

The air was filled with joyous energy and full of excitement even as hours passed and the dance ended, sending students home on a starlit night.
