On Thursday, November 7, 2013, RWBY fans logged on to Rooster Teeth, a popular YouTuber’s, site to watch the Volume 1 Finale of Monty Oum’s show RWBY.
The show follows the stories of four main characters; they all attend a prestigious academy for the art of becoming Hunters, or in the case of the female main characters, Huntresses.
The name RWBY comes from the names of the main characters: Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang. All are allusions to fairy tale characters, as illustrated in the trailers released by Rooster Teeth.
Monty Oum created the show in 2012.
“Monty Oum woke up one day and thought, red, yellow, white and black are good colors; we should make an anime about the colors,” said Miles Luna, one of RWBY’s co-directors and a co-writer.
Even before the first episode was aired in July, there was group of dedicated RWBY fans. “People saw the trailers and got RWBY tattoos,” said Miles.
“The most rewarding part was seeing what we wrote come to life,” said Kerry Shawcross, a co-director for the show.
“It was such a good feeling; like seeing your kid graduate, ” said Miles.
Since then, the show has gained a broader audience. During the finale, there were over 400 tweets composed using the hashtag RWBY and the episode has received over 45,000 views on Rooster Teeth’s website.
The staff is currently working on Volume 2, but its release date is currently unknown.
“We want to get them out as soon as possible,” said Kerry.
Kerry and Miles both agreed that the staff has had a great time making RWBY. “We make each other laugh all day,” said Miles.
On November 12, 2013, Rooster Teeth released the Volume 1 DVD, which can be purchased at multiple franchises.
“This time last year, RWBY was just getting started,” said Miles.
Kerry and Miles also said that they will continue to make a great project that their audience will enjoy, and that that is how they will keep the fan base they have acquired.
