Movies can create new interesting stories, from action to adventure, as well as comedy and Horror. As 2023 comes to an end, many films are made and released throughout many platforms such as popular streaming services like Netflix and Hulu; Using The IMDb (Internet Movie Database), here are the top ten movies of 2023.
Coming in at number ten is “The Flash” with a rating of 6.7/10. In 2023, “The Flash” faced challenges in attracting audiences due to controversies surrounding its star Ezra Miller. Despite Warner Bros marketing struggles, director Andy Muschietti engaged fans with multiversal references featuring cameos from different versions of DC superheroes from both DC movies and TV shows.
Next, there is the film “Killer of The Flower Moon,” which is rated a 7.8/10 and according to IMDb has been labeled a major hit by Hollywood, starring major actors like Leonardo Di Caprio, this film has earned the number ninth spot on the list.
Marvel, superhero and especially animation fans had been anticipating “Spider-Man: Across the Spider Verse,” which has earned a rating of 8.6/10, making it one of 2023 most watched summer films, and it is at number 8 on this list.
“Five Nights at Freddy’s” had some fans disappointed with its targeting of younger children asthey expected more horror and gore in the film. However, that didn’t stop fans from appreciating the lore, background and relations the movie had to the game franchise, landing this movie seventh on the list with a rating of 5.5/10, and was one of the biggest releases of this past October.
A blast from the past introduces “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” with a new animation bringing the characters to life. Universal’s film made $1.36 billion worldwide, making it the second-highest grossing movie of the year with a rating of 7/10 and according to IMDb, the most successful video game adaptation of all time, making it sixth on the list.
“Super Mario Bros. (1985), in particular, really captured my imagination when I was a kid. There’s just something about the graphics, the movement, and the sense of discovery and wonder that just really got me going.” said Aaron Horvath, one of the directors of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”
“John Wick: Chapter 4” had a wild release in March with its lead actor Keanu Reeves coming back for another movie. “John Wick: Chapter 4” earned a franchise-best $440 million at the worldwide box office. IMDb rank the film at fifth place, with a rating of 7.7/10.
Next, there is “The Little Mermaid” live action movie, which struck controversy amongst fans, as some argued that Disney should stick to the original 1989 animated tale, without being inclusive to other races, and some found this to be hatred towards the black community. The list has this movie sitting on rating of 7.2/10.
Marvel have once again outdone themselves with the movie “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”. This film earned over $845 million worldwide and the title of the fourth highest-grossing movie of 2023, with a rating of 7.9/10, it ranks third on the list.
“Barbie,” The well-known children’s toy doll has made a comeback with one of the greatest films of the year. Barbie focused on dismantling the patriarchy in her native Barbie Land and in the real world, making this movie deeper than thought to be. This movie had fans dressing up as Barbie characters to watch “Barbie” in cinemas all over the world, leading to its placement of number two on the list and it is rated a 6.9/10 rating.
Finally, the top movie of 2023, the most anticipated and most successful film according to the list was “Oppenheimer”. The countdown on Nolan’s grand-scale project started in 2021, and its anticipated debut snatched up $82.4 million domestically on opening weekend, remaining the top title on IMDb for a full month and securing the number one spot on the list for 2023 and earning a rating of 8.4/10.
“I think it’s very easy to make the case for Oppenheimer as the most important person who ever lived, because he is the person who facilitated and achieved atomic weapons,” said “Oppenheimer” director Christopher Nolan.
In 2023, the film industry has brought many movies, from superhero films like “The Flash” and “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” to thrillers like “Oppenheimer.” Some of this year’s releases featured iconic franchises like “Super Mario Bros” and films like “Barbie,” which reflected nostalgia amongst many people. Many promising movies for fans have come out this year, leaving then stoked for a new year of films in 2024.
