From the very beginning, one of the main things the Biden-Harris campaign has criticized the Trump administration for is their handling of climate change and the threat it poses to the environment. Climate change does not only pose an environmental threat but also many economical and personal health risks as well. Climate change is a predominant global challenge that doesn’t just affect the U.S but the whole world and it will require every country to bring about some change in order for any change to be noticeable.
With Joe Biden winning the election, hope has been brought to many of his supporters as Biden has made many claims of plans that are to be put in place in order to move the country forward including returning to the Paris Agreement on climate change and becoming a leading figure of positive foreign policy environmental habits and trading.
“Under the Trump administration there were a lot of concerning decisions being made including backing out of the Paris Agreement that dealt with the greenhouse gases, I mean what was he thinking? With what Biden plans to do I feel like the environment is in much better hands,” states Vicki Mills, a vegan and animal rights activist in Hialeah.
The Biden campaign has made some outlining plans, The Clean Energy Revolution and Green New Deal, addressing the threat that climate change poses. With these outlines Biden plans to face some of the climate problems head on by ensuring the U.S. achieves a 100% clean energy economy and net-zero emissions no later than 2050 according to their campaign plan.
Under the Obama-Biden Administration there were many advancements for renewable energy through the many investments in clean energy technology, such as the increase in domestically produced wind turbines in 2011 from 37% to 67%, in order to regulate the copious amount of carbon emissions and global waste reduction.
In order to ensure this legacy lives, Biden plans to sign a series of new executive orders which, within the first year of his presidency, will establish a series of investments towards rebuilding wind turbines, bridges, and solar panels as well as investing in other clean energy resources.
“Climate change is now. There are so many issues that need to be covered…I hope Biden wins the election because if he doesn’t I’m scared about where the world will be in a couple of years,” states Carolina Hidalgo, a supporter of the Biden-Harris campaign, when asked about her opinions before the election results were announced.
With many climate change advancements under his belt, such as the introduction of one of the first-ever climate bills in Congress in 1986 and the Recovery Act, which was a large investment in clean energy during his time as Vice President, many of his supporters already feel safer and cleaner as their hope is restored for the future.
“As someone who is environmentally active, you know I try not to litter and with recycling and such, it’s a refreshing feeling to feel like the president has bright plans for the future that I hope he sticks to,” states Mills.
