BTS “BE” album review: Giving hope with “Life Goes On”

BTS “BE” album review: Giving hope with “Life Goes On”

By Angely S. Pena-Agramonte

On November 21th, BTS released their album titled “BE” that premiered at the AMA’s on Sunday.  This eight title-track album gives people a greater connection to BTS and a greater connection to their music.

This album is an emblematic symbol of how this year has been for many people. Many have wished for life to go on, and others have cried in the face of all the pain this year has caused people.  The album “BE” serves as a way to cope with all these emotions and ultimately dance through them.

From a group that wasn’t allowed to perform in many South Korean music shows, to reforming what is known as the K-pop genre today to owning American stages and winning numerous awards, ARMYS are proud of what their music has become and the positive impact they have had on the world.

The album sheds light on how this year has been and, reminding ARMYS and people all around the world that “Life Goes On”.

Life Goes On

This is the most emotional song BTS has come out with in a while and reminds people that there is a backbone of support provided by them and that people aren’t alone with what they are suffering with and the insecurities that lie ahead shouldn’t be worried about.

This song truly is smart to put as an intro as it pulls the audience in towards the rest of the album. Though it sounds depressing, it’s very uplifting and serves to be great preparation for the rest of the album.

Life does, in fact, go on and people need to learn to accept that; and ultimately, this is the message this song shed light on.

“Like an echo in the forest, the day will come back around / As if nothing happened, life goes on,” sings Jungkook and Jimin in their duo chorus, depicting how the world must opt to move on from their moments of dismal.

Simply a beautiful song, this lyrical melody emanates comfort and is definitely something that was needed in such unfortunate and uncertain times.

Fly to My Room

This album is quite sentimental — but in a bittersweet way. This song sounds chill and relaxing while keeping the continuity of that retro style that the rest of the album seems to follow.

Written by RM, Suga, and J-Hope, the laid-back track speaks volumes and seems to be a duet between Jimin and V, which we have seen before. Surprisingly, though, Suga comes in with his verse and turns the song into something far more powerful.

The last chorus is an ensemble that appears to be all the members and adds runs in the back, which really ties into the song as a whole as well, ending on a breath.

This song is breathtaking and beautifully crafted, and all this could be noticed with one listen, but then when the lyrics are read it adds more depth and feels more personal to them.

Blue & Grey

Blue & Grey is well composed. It really brought attention to the last verses, but most of all, that bridge definitely hits the spot. The song truly felt resolved and the progression of the overall song was immaculate.

“I sat on the rooftop and screamed at the sky / I sat on the edge until I knew deep inside / Like the sky, I will always be empty / The horizon, my love, forever out of reach.”

Initially composed and produced by member V for his mixtape, the ballad acts as the “heart of this album, which comes in resemblance to the sound of a pulsing heartbeat throughout the chorus. The colors blue and grey captures an of sadness and depression through the symbolic language of color.

In a way, this song is emotional and bitter-sweet. The tone of the vocals was very soft and ethereal which added a very nice touch to the song. The rap verses were equally as beautiful and fit well with the rest of the song as well.

Skit

The skit is usually a space for BTS to speak or include moments that they are proud of. The previous skit they had enacted was their billboard acceptance speech in the album Love Yourself: Answer.

In this skit track, the members talk about how they were so happy about breaking all these records with their title track: “Dynamite”.

Uplifting the melodic vibes, the tunes not only provides a change in energy, but also allows the listeners to connect with BTS on a more personal level that doesn’t only encompass their music, but emotionally as well.

This serves as a pause between the more emotional songs which come before the skit and then the more hype and upbeat songs that follow.

Telepathy

This song feels so nostalgic and has the disco vibes which are very prominent throughout the entire album and seems to be the driving concept. If happiness was personified as a song this would be it.

Dis-ease

Dis-ease is truly a great representation of what quarantine life has been for many people. Mental health has become a recurring issue during self-isolation and this song perfectly mirrors this idea reminding listeners to stay positive and keep pushing forward.

“Every day I comfort myself / They’re all the same, ain’t so special,” Jungkook and Jimin (once more) sang together in their chorus.

This line represents how every day has been. Life has ultimately tuned into this mundane cycle that almost seemed inescapable.

Stay

This is more of a techno song and is a nice transition into the more lively song which is dynamite. The fading out effect is so pleasing to the ear and makes the song feel resolved and well put together.

While this song is similar to Best of me, with it’s combination of K-Pop/EDM, it still feels new and fits in well in the order that it was introduced in the album.

Dynamite

This song is ultimately life-changing. The album couldn’t be complete without this song. The very essence of this song and how uplifting it is truly give something to be jovial about amidst all the madness that occurred this year.

Everything from the video, the dance, and the fact that the whole song is in English truly connects with the audience.

Although this is different from what BTS does this retro disco is just a feel-good bop that was truly iconic. This song broke records, and it’s easy to see why. It is simply an incredible song.

The progression of this song is well organized. Although the choruses were the same, the energy levels progressed as the song progressed which was refreshing and made the song feel resolved by the end when the bridge was slowed down and made way for the final, and very powerful, last chorus.

This song would remind people of the end track for a happy movie such as trolls. This song is memorable in every shape and form.

The BE album was incredible in all shapes and forms. From the message to how it sounded these lyrics spoke volumes and had depth which is missing from many artists these days.

Many see this album as their last before a possible hiatus as member Jin faces mandatory enlistment into the army.  Although ARMYs know that BTS isn’t forever, they know that their music will definitely outlive them.
