The Fault in Our Stars: What A Lot Of Us Have Been Waiting For by Marissa Echeverria

Throughout the movie theater, you can hear the painful sobs of all the teenage and prepubescent girls. The Fault In Our Stars, the cinematic adaptation of John Green’s latest novel, has been one of the most anticipated movies of this year. People who read the book have been waiting to see this movie since January of 2012, when it was announced that the novel was being made into a feature film.

The movie focuses on the rather cliche topic of first love between the main characters Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters, but the story is so different that you’re drawn even more closely to the characters. The movie focuses on cancer kids, and while they’ve been a common focus of many stories, Green centers the story more on what they really are: humans. Maybe that’s what catches the viewers’ attention the most; that cancer patients are more than just the cancer. The cancer just adds to the heart wrenching pain of this piece.

One of the main aspects of the movie’s success is that the movie stayed mostly true to the book—from the script to the setting to, most importantly, the emotions depicted by the characters. Hazel, Augustus, Isaac, and Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster were all played by actors that did the characters justice. For those who aren’t already in love with the main characters, get ready. These characters were played by the right people who will have your heart swaying. Shailene Woodley played the sassy and witty Hazel Grace, Ansel Elgort played the persistent sweetheart Augustus, and Nat Wolff played the sarcastic Isaac.

In regards to the parts that were missing, it would’ve been nice to have them in the film, but when adapting a book, there are always parts that are cut because a movie cannot run forever.

Something the movie was great at was ripping the viewers’ hearts to shreds. In my entire life, I had never heard so many sobs and crying noises. It wasn’t just half the theater or three quarters, it was all of it. If a movie can do this to so many people, it’s doing something right.

The soundtrack for the film went along well with the scenes and overall feelings of the movie. It included high-profile artists like Ed Sheeran and Birdy.

To those who read the book and haven’t seen it yet: you will not be disappointed. And to those who haven’t read the book, go watch it and experience the simple yet powerful story of two young lovers.
