National Food Days: Days You Can’t Miss This Week

By Roxana Casanueva

Food is the root of everything. It evokes memories, creates experiences, and is so cherished around the world that there are several holidays dedicated to its celebration. It’s fascinating how relationships and cultures are built around appetizing cuisines.

Spring break is here, and while we might be stuck at home, this week encompasses five good holidays that need celebration — and even if we missed some holidays already, who is stopping us from giving them their deserved rendition at our homes?

Monday, March 23rd:

The first day of spring break was National Chips and Dip Day. You certainly eat chips wrong if you don’t have dip on the side. Dips and salsa adds great flavor to some of your favorites: potato chips, tortilla chips, corn chips, pita chips, and even popcorn chips. There are dozens of dips to partner your favorite chips with. From dips made with sour cream and salsas to cheeses and guac, the combinations are endless.

Crunchy, authentic chips meet fresh salsa at “On The Border” — where it’s always salsa time. Aside from being an actual restaurant, On The Border is also the fastest growing brand of chips and dips in the country. As a restaurant, they have delivery and pick-ups — so no threat to breaking any government recommendations.

Tuesday, March 24:

This food holiday was dedicated to one of the classic sandwiches, Cheesesteak.

Born in South Philly, the cheesesteak is a cultural icon today and has a front-row seat in the sandwich hall of fame.

If you are bored at home, you can well learn how to cook this American classic, or, you could order cheesesteak from some restaurants. Uber eats can easily get you the classic of Charley’s Philly Steaks: thinly sliced beefsteak, melted cheese, and warm baked bread all in one. Varying from the original Philly cheesesteak to other toppings, like pepperoni, crispy bacon, and spicy jalapeño — if you do order from Charley’s Philly Steaks, don’t forget the ultimate fries or any of the fully-loaded gourmet fries on the menu.

Wednesday, March 25:

This holiday is a little different, in the way that it is International Waffle Day. So, don’t even dare think about pancakes on this special day.

Today is the day that all waffle lovers come together to drench their waffles in sugar-rich maple syrup. Opened 24 hours, the famous Waffle House offers a breakfast menu, including the best Belgium waffles, with your choice of chocolate chips, peanut butter, or pecan waffles — and of course, you can order delivery through either Door Dash or Uber Eats!

Thursday, March 26:

On National Nougat Day, you can enjoy a Nougat made with sugar, whipped egg whites, and roasted nuts (sometimes with candied fruit). Nougat is chewy and is found in many chocolate bars, so next time you make a necessary trip to the supermarket, consider picking up one of these candy bars and you will have successfully celebrated National Nougat day: Snickers, Babe Ruth, 3 Musketeers, Mars Bars, Reese’s Whipps.

Friday, March 27:

National Spanish Paella Day honors a rice dish that originated in Spain. There isn’t a correct way to make a paella. I’m fact, there are actually several different versions of paellas. Any type of ingredient that goes well with rice can be used — from chicken and seafood to vegetables, spices, and sometimes beans. However, some key ingredients include olive oil and saffron, which is an essential spice that gives the rice that rich, golden color that is idiosyncratic of paella. Restaurants don’t stand a chance against abuelitas homemade paellas, so don’t worry about going out to celebrate this holiday. Ask your abuela to cook you some paella, and well, if it’s not posible, then why not try making some of this delicacy on your own?
