Jaguar New Years

Jaguar New Years

By Kelly Sanchez

With the new year right around the corner (literally two days away) and the holiday season already upon us, many people are reflecting on their life choices. New Year’s resolutions are an opportunity for people to start making changes and turn a new leaf.

Many students at Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) are taking it upon themselves to make plans to better themselves personally and for the upcoming school year. Some of the most common New Year’s resolutions are to lose weight, learn a new skill or hobby, and to live life to the fullest.

“My New Year’s resolution is to get better grades and try to be more happy,” said Evelyn Valladares, an MLEC student.

The majority of MLEC students fail to stick to their resolutions; in fact, most give up by February, according to a poll done on Twitter.

When asked whether she thinks people truly keep their resolutions, “They say they’re gonna do something and they never do it,” continued Evelyn Valladares.

Some of the reasons people fail to keep their resolutions are because they’re unrealistic, they have no plan, or they don’t believe in themselves.

“People fail New Year’s resolutions because they’re not as motivated as you think they are. They just do it because it’s a new year,” stated Jose Llanes, a former student at MLEC.

Despite the fact that many people fail at accomplishing their goals for the new year, there are some that follow through with them. New Year’s resolutions give people the chance to start with a clean slate and work on self-improvement.

“My New Year’s resolution is to get closer to God,” Damien Way, a student at MLEC, said.

Some of MLEC’s students’ more academic-centered goals revolve around being more productive and becoming a better student.

“I want to do something productive like FLVS or dual enrollment,” Juan Hernandez stated.

The New Year has a lot in store for our MEC students. 2020 gives people the chance to reinvent themselves and opens new doors. It is a new year full of opportunities and new experiences, so make it count, jaguars!
