Three of the top tiers of women in the music industry joined together for a collaboration on Charlie’s Angels soundtrack single “Don’t Call Me Angel.” In the much-awaited single, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, and Lana Del Rey intertwined their separate genres of music to bring an anthem for independent women— except, it is not so much of an “anthem,” but rather a convoluted cacophony trying to make sense of itself. The song has simply fallen short of its overhyped and expected success.
The trio released their song and music video after days of teasing on social media, when the clock struck midnight on Friday, September 13th. The concept behind the song was to showcase three women of different design and personalities uniting together to show that men hold no control over them. It holds the essence of the movie Charlie’s Angels in both the song and video, yet there’s something that just isn’t right.
Each of these artists holds the capability of producing quality content; but when it came to producing their most recent song, the combination of their differing vocal styles didn’t mingle well with each other. Each artist’s verse sounds like clips and distorted pieces from different songs being mixed together.
The four-octave range of Ariana Grande’s voice followed by Lana del Rey’s soft and “dream pop” music has the song following two separate singing styles that don’t mesh. The video is the exact representation of the mess that this song really is.
The three women present themselves in the music video as the stereotypical“Victoria’s Secret” models, each on a mission showing their different approaches to espionage– neither flowing with the other. Ariana takes the diplomatic approach, while Miley is seen in a bloody brawl, and Lana is left mesmerizing her own collection of weapons. The deliberation and presentation of the video made fans even more confused.
Three of Hollywood’s most famous women came together to produce a disarray and underwhelming song that leaves many wanting more.
