With a sound hard to predict, hard to describe, and hard to encapture, 17-year-old Billie Eilish is a pop artist quickly rising to the top—one known for her “vibe” and whisper vocals. Growing from 800k to 15 million followers in the span of a year, Eilish is also a media personality on Instagram, showing her goofy persona to her fans at every turn.
Yet, with only an EP and an array of singles, Eilish’s diehard fans begged for more. Due to this, her upcoming album created a type of buzz that is rare in the music world and became one of the most anticipated pop debut albums.
The album’s previously released singles had fans in a frenzy. From the melodramatic and tear-jerking, “When the Party’s Over” to the thrilling and creepy, “Bury a Friend.” On March 29th, Eilish finally released her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
In just a couple of hours, the album sits at #1 on the iTunes charts and fans worldwide are sharing their opinions on the 14 tracks. Each song is based on a different fear and each has its own vibe but they all somehow show fans Eilish’s journey through these various emotions. Critics everywhere are rejoicing about the “perfectly flawed first album.”
Tracks like “ilomilo,” “xanny,” and “all good girls go to hell” begin with Eilish’s soft angelic voice, then the bass drops and the lyrics about death, desire, and fear are mixed with random blaring sounds and an array of instruments. The second track on the album, “bad guy,” amplifies Eilish’s personality with creative lyrics, a catchy beat, and an assured “duh!” hidden in the chorus.
The album is wrapped up with the final three songs “listen before i go,” “i love you,” and “goodbye.” They change the mood from electrifying to heart-wrenching in a matter of seconds. Meant to form a sentence, the three songs provide the perfect melancholy end to the memorable pop star’s album.
