Meet the Newest Jaguar: Ms. Altamirano

Meet the Newest Jaguar: Ms. Altamirano

By Daniel Gonzalez III

There is a new English teacher in the school and she might have more things in common with the average student than one would think. Ms. Altamirano is the newly recruited English teacher currently teaching English honors to sophomores and when she was a student she actually attended Miami Lakes Educational Center, enrolled in the Forensics strand within the Cambridge academy. So even though she’s been in the school for three weeks she already knows all her colleagues since they were her teachers in high school. Although she believed it would be awkward at first she found herself being able to relate adult to adult with them.

Ms. Altamirano graduated in 2011 and then attended university at Dartmouth majoring in philosophy then later switching to psychology and finally sticking with theater. Theater actually plays a big role in her life. She has always loved it, she was in the drama club in highschool and says that her end goal in life is becoming a college professor teaching theater. Her favorite play is Mud by Maria Irene Fornes.

Along with theater Ms.Altamirano has a lot of hobbies such as watching Netflix, painting, art in general, lots of knitting, biking and watching movies. She actually also has a huge love for movies especially since she used to work at the movie theater. She even has movie posters of the biggest hits on the walls of her classroom. Her favorite kind of movies are horror and she specifically favored the Silence of the Lambs which she said she watched every weekend during school.

There are alot of things that make Ms.Altamirano unique. One of them is being able to relate to the student. The fact of being a millennial for her  has allowed her to keep up with the same trends that high school students follow today. For example, she says that there was a period in her life where she was called “The Meme Queen”. She mentions how her knowledge of the meme culture helps her relate with and understand the students.

She hasn’t yet gotten accustomed to the routine since its only been her third week but she says that she is excited to start. She has always wanted to be a teacher and already has thoughts of moving into more rigorous courses such as AICE or AP. Overall she’s a nice, friendly person and is sure to be a great addition to the Jaguar family.
