M-DCPS Students Shine in New ‘Nation’s Report Card’

M-DCPS Students Shine in New ‘Nation’s Report Card’

Miami-Dade County Public Schools students are shining in the new Nation’s Report Card. According to new results released on Tuesday by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), Florida was the only state where students scored higher on a national math exam than last year, thus making progress where the rest of the country remained in place.

Nationally, fourth-graders made no improvements in math or reading and eighth-graders scored flat in math and only slightly improved in reading.

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos issued the following statement in response:

“The report card is in, and the results are clear: We can and we must do better for America’s students. Our nation’s reading and math scores continue to stagnate.” s

In Florida, however, fourth-graders improved by four points in the math exam and remained ahead of the nation in the reading exam. Eighth-graders rose four points in the math exam and three points in the reading exam.

“Something very good is happening in Florida, obviously,” said Peggy Carr, Associate Commissioner of Assessment at the National Center for Education Statistics, during a telephone call with reporters ahead of the release. “Florida needs to be commended.”

Locally, M-DCPS fourth graders ranked #1 in Reading and #2 in Mathematics.

Miami-Dade County, a Florida Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA) district, outscored the nation, large city sample, and all other TUDA districts in both Reading and Mathematics, at the fourth grade level. In the eighth grade level, M-DCPS students outscored the other districts in Reading, and matched their scores in Mathematics.

“Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ students continue to surpass the nation on standardized assessments, including NAEP-TUDA,” said M-DCPS Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.

“Miami-Dade’s results for what is widely considered the Nation’s Report Card, suggests that academic standards, instructional rigor, and student achievement continue to move on an upward trend in our school district.”

M-DCPS Hispanic students continue to shine, achieving higher Reading and Mathematics scores in all tested grade levels than both the national public school and large city samples.

“This is an impressive achievement that our School Board, students, teachers, employees and the entire community can celebrate,” said Carvalho.
