iPhone, Android, iPad, and Tablet’s Must Have Apps for 2014 by Maria Vasquez

This past Christmas, many people were given a computer, tablet, cell phone, or all three! Now that 2013 has come to an end and 2014 is just beginning what better way to start the year than with apps for your new device?

Fitness and Health

A lot of people made “losing weight” or “getting fit” part of their New Year’s resolutions. Here are some apps that can help reach your goal:

7 Minutes is an exercise application that was created for everyday use.

“[7 Minutes] is really convenient because out of my entire day, I just need to set aside 7 minutes to work out,” said Noe Masis, a sophomore in Communication and Entertainment.

People who enjoy running can download “Map My Run.” It provides the distance and time that was run, walked, or jogged. It also keeps track of calories burned and consumed.

If you’re into keeping track of your calories but don’t want to go through the hassle of digging for nutritional facts, you can download “Live Strong: Calorie Tracker.” It’s very easy to record your meals, snacks, and exercise. The app also provides a community page where you can speak to other people for motivation, advice, and tips.

Entertainment

Netflix is the must-have app when it comes to entertainment. It can be watched on every device from smart phone to gaming console.

“Netflix is my best friend. I love it because it has almost every show, movie, and documentary I want to watch,” says Daniela Cardozo, a sophomore in Communications and Entertainment.

Another video app that has a much wider variety than any other: YouTube. You can watch “Lohanthony’s” newest video or even John Green’s Crash Course videos.

If you don’t already have iBooks or Newsstand in your iOS device, or if you have an Android, be sure to download Amazon’s Kindle app. It has a much wider variety of books and magazines than iBooks and Newsstand. This app can also be downloaded on most PC and Mac computers as well as any tablet.

Want a quick laugh? Vine. Those seven-second videos will keep you entertained for hours. All you need is to make an account or connect it to Twitter and you’ll be set.

Social Networking

“Flipboard” is an application, available on both Android and iPhone, which connects your Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook all on one “board.” It also allows you to tweet and post directly from the board.

Snapchat is another fun must-have app. It’s very simple to use: Take a picture or a video and then write a caption or doodle on it and send to multiple friends for a certain amount of seconds. After those seconds pass, your friend can’t ever see the picture or video again. It keeps the app interesting and fun.

This year, there will be a lot more apps available for tablets, iPads, and computers since they’re getting to be as common as cell phones. When it comes to smart phones, there will most likely be an increase in applications for videos since the use of Vine and Instagram video is still rising.
