As the students of MLEC jump in fright and endless screams echo the haunted house, music blares through the room, making the students dance into the night. Harvest Fest is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year, consisting of dancing, music, and long lines for snacks and drinks, all ran by the different clubs in the school stretching across the gym. To keep the fun going, there are several events to participate in, such as throwing pies in people’s faces. But besides the usual excitement, the most important part of the Harvest Fest (or any party for that matter) will always be the impression you make: in this case, your Halloween costume.
Everyone who participates in Halloween events and trick-or-treating know that costumes should be unique and different. These costumes can take form in a variety different styles that are not necessarily horror clothing: such as latest trends or characters from a TV show. Dressing up for Harvest Fest is something that takes time and skills, especially when trying to abide by the school’s policy on what you can and can’t wear. Wearing something other than the usual cat outfit is another factor to think of as the night of horror comes near.
Although it is a understatement when it is said that everyone loves Disney, wearing a black shirt tucked into a red polka dot dress with a bow attached to Minnie ears can be overrated. There are at least 154 Walt Disney movies to bless the earth, yet many characters aren’t appreciated enough. There were many different Disney princesses that weren’t official, such as Esmerelda from Hunchback of Notre Dame, Megara from Hercules, and Jane from Tarzan.
Leading character roles who aren’t princesses or royalty – including Tinker Bell, Peter Pan, Dumbo, Pinocchio, and even Mary Poppins – should never be forgotten and deserve to be used as costume ideas. Elsa, an ice queen from Frozen, is still a popular character to dress. From Frozen, characters like Olaf and Anna are more ideas that are not official queens or princesses in Disney. Aside from Anna, who is technically a princess but not officially in the Disney Princess squad, Moana is an ongoing trend. Wearing hibiscus flowers and long skirts is no longer being a classic hula dancer – it means being a Hawaiian Disney hero.
More under appreciated characters include Buzz Lightyear and Woody (the perfect best friend costume), the Grand Duke from Cinderella, Nani (plus Lilo and Stitch for three siblings or friends) from Lilo and Stitch, and the Muses from Hercules (the best girl power to exist besides the Powerpuff girls and Charlie’s angels).
If Disney characters don’t seem to fit, there are still many more ideas for costumes. Even though it’s a classic common wear, clowns are definitely in this October. Due to the scary movie IT, wearing creepy clown face paint while holding a red balloon is a go. Rather than wearing masks from Party City, last year at Harvest Fest, the drama kids managed to complete their zombie outfits by using face paint and makeup. They easily created the school into a Haunted House by wearing regular white tees and jeans, adding fake blood and shreds. This is the perfect costume idea for those who rather not go all out with an outfit and need a cheap ticket to dress like a patient from a psycho institution or to rise from the dead.
Girls can definitely use the Harvest Fest as an excuse to experiment with makeup, and creating horrifying looks like a doll face, skeletons, and even acting like it’s the day of the Purge. Using face paint or makeup to create a colorful fairy or mermaid look and using fake blood is perfect for events like the Harvest Fest, especially if schools tend to ban the use of masks and weapons.
Costumes can come from all lengths that are creative, matching, or scary, and can be a classic or different. Not all costumes require having to go out and buy a full outfit set, but can be made with regular clothing and paint, makeup, or fake blood. Even drawing your face similar to a Snapchat filter can qualify, for the list of costume ideas is never ending.
