Yesterday was May 4, or rather, Star Wars Day— one day out of the year dedicated solely to celebrating the Star Wars franchise. The date was chosen by fans as a pun on the iconic catchphrase “May the force be with you” as “May the fourth be with you.”
Not only is it a fantastic play on words, this day also serves as the perfect excuse for all Star Wars lovers to wear their jedi merch or marathon all 10 of the movies.
Although the idea of May the 4th began with fans, the company Lucasfilm, which creates the films, has encouraged the celebrations, making this day that much more special.
As years pass and more May the 4th celebrations take place, involvement from social media platforms have increased, causing #StarWarsDay to trend and official partners to offer sales, giveaways, and exclusives. There are now even hosting parties and other activities to honor Star Wars Day.
Here at MLEC, students took the opportunity to break out everything from decorative galactic t-shirts to Star Wars themed makeup in order to showcase their love for the films. Amongst all the suffocating testing that has been taking place this past week, May The 4th has acted like a much need breath of fresh air.
The unofficial holiday changed up the tedious routines developed throughout the week and brought back a little school spirit for all to enjoy.
For those clueless as to what Star Wars is, here’s a crash course on the movies: an epic space opera made up of exactly 10 films, filled with practically every genre, including science fiction, action, and romance, describing the adventures of multiple characters caught between the battlings forces of the “dark side” and the “light side” within an alternate universe, taking place “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.”
Star Wars has multiple prequels and a recent, extremely successful, sequel— Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This December 15, the next and long awaited sequel, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, will be released into theaters for all fans to enjoy.
Regardless, this is a chance to celebrate the movies thats has influenced our pop culture, multiple times, a franchise that our parents grew up with and have shared with us over the past few years. Now fans will have to wait another year for the chance to get excited all over again and geek out about Star Wars.
