For almost half a decade, the main protagonist from BBC’s “Doctor Who,” known as “the Doctor,” has escaped death time after time. This Christmas, the cycle begins yet again, bringing the 12th doctor: Peter Capaldi.
Capaldi isn’t like the past three doctors who were not widely known. He’s played characters in several movies before, as well as T.V. shows; perhaps his most famous one being the ‘aggressive, profane and feared’ Malcom Tucker from “The Thick of It”.
“Being asked to play The Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the “Doctor” himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can’t wait to get started.” said Capaldi.
Being Matt Smith’s successor, Capaldi will be the 12th actor to play the part, as well as continuing the ‘white male’ pattern which the Doctor seems to follow in the regeneration process. The 12thwill appear on season eight, and will continue to travel with his perky companion Clara Oswald, who is played by Jenna Coleman.
“I feel that he’s very serious and has that type of aura around him. He kind of alters the role now since they’re changing the ‘Doctor’ from a young male actor to an older, more sophisticated one. It isn’t what people expected, but it’s still a good fit,” said Chloe Baldino, a senior in Cambridge.
It isn’t known whether or not this ‘Doctor’ will be the same as the previous one (a young actor playing and old man), however, it has been hinted that this Doctor will be a particularly dark one, whose attitude contradicts Clara’s. Also revealed is the fact that Peter Capaldi is keeping his Celtic accent for the role, unlike David Tennant, the tenth Doctor, who dropped his Scottish accent for the role.
Whovians world-wide wait anxiously for Christmas when Steven Moffat, “Doctor Who’s” main director,
will take yet another character dear to them. Saying good-bye to Matt Smith and hello Capaldi will certainly not be an easy task.
“He’s an extraordinarily talented actor who can seemingly turn his hand to anything. We can’t wait to premiere his unique take on the Doctor on Christmas Day and we are sure he’s going to become one ofthe all-time classic Doctors,” said Ben Stephenson from BBC Drama Commissioning.
