5 Things You Learned at Journalism Day by Maria Vasquez

“Journalism day was so much fun, I had a great time and learned so many helpful tips! Can’t wait until next year,” said Elizabeth Martinez, a sophomore in Cambridge.

Fun and journalism? Yes, it’s possible! The equivalent of a field day for normal kids is Journalism Day for student journalists across Miami-Dade. Journalism Day was held October 26th at FIU’s Student Center.

Groups of teenagers were allowed to explore whatever classes they wanted, all of which improved their journalistic skills. Some classes included: “It all starts with a headline,” “Interview: Asking the right questions,” “So You Think You Can Write,” and “Photoshop: The basics.”

Professional journalists themselves taught the classes. Some were from The Miami Herald, Herff Jones, CBS 4, The NBA, and even from local schools. They taught many things and made various good points. Here are a few:

  1. As writers, we tend to leave the headline for the last minute and, usually, right before we turn in our final drafts. We forget that it is the first thing a reader sees and use to determine whether or not they are going to read the article.
  2. There are two types of headlines a newspaper should always have: one for print and one for online articles. The printed headline should be interesting, fair, and accurate. The online headline should be like the printed one but more specific and detailed.
  3. When interviewing, be sure to treat the interview like a conversation.
  4. Show the interviewee respect by confirming something they said so that the correct quote can be documented. Also, respect them by letting them know that whatever is said, will be recorded and published.
  5. Getting organized before an interview is key. Know the information and be prepared so the person can tell that you what you’re doing (and it helps with those pre-interview jitters.)

This year’s theme was “100 Years of Student Expression.” Over 500 students attended Journalism Day this year and it was a success! They were able to meet some great writers, bond with other journalists, and take home some valuable tips to better their writing, interviewing, and editing skills.
