Spirit week begins tomorrow and brings on the age-old dilemma of what to wear. Here are some ideas just to get you started on what you can do for this year’s Spirit Week.
For all these ideas, keep in mind that Halloween has just ended and costumes of all sorts are going to half off. Take advantage of that any way you can!
Thursday -Tie- Dye Day
Tie- Dye Day brings on a great opportunity to go and get messy while making your outfit. If you’re planning on making your own, the essentials are rubber bands, a 100% white cotton shirt, and bottles of dye. Gloves and a plastic table sheet for your workspace will help prevent any messes.
While there’s a lot of Tie Dye Designs, the ones covered here are the Bull’s-eye and the Swirl design. Before starting on any of these designs, make sure to read the instructions for the dye you’re going to use. You must also prewash your shirt and make sure it’s damp before doing anything.
With the Bull’s-eye design, you start by choosing the center of your bull’s-eye and pinching the part up into a tube. You tie it with a rubber band, and proceed to tie another rubber band every 2 or 3 inches. After each section is tied off, you can squirt whatever color you want into each desired section. You wrap it in plastic, let it sit for 4 to 6 hours, then wash and dry separately.
For the Swirl design, you choose where you want the swirl to be and proceed to pinch and twist the shirt from that point until it’s all twisted neatly together. You then tie rubber bands around the bundle, making at least six sections or more depending on your tastes. With your dye, you then go ahead and squirt whatever color you want into each widget. Wrap it up for 4 to 6 hours, wash and dry and you have your swirl design.
Tuesday – Flashback Day
Flashback Day provides a good opportunity to rifle through your parent’s things, but it can also be a day to come up with some creative costumes.
You can go as a hippy, in bell bottoms, a tie-dye shirt (wink-wink), and some platforms. Cavemen and women are easy to do. Get some leopard print anything with some plastic bones and there you have it, a costume with little effort.
The same goes for making a Greek toga. Grab any bed sheet and, taking the top right corner in hand, wrap it around your chest and back. Wrap it around your chest one more times, and bring the second corner up. You can tie it or pin it to the first corner. You can also pin the layer to make it more secure, and after adding a gold belt and headband, you are now an ancient Greek citizen.
Wednesday- Opposite Day
Opposite Day isn’t only for going out and dressing like the opposite gender. You can also come up with a lot of other ideas that convey the opposite theme. You can wear your shoes on opposite feet, wear your clothes inside out, or even wear them backwards.
If you want to go as the opposite gender, there are easy ways to do it. Girls can pin up their hair and wear caps. Use paint to draw on facial hair and wear low lying jeans with thick belts, and baggy t-shirts can finish up the design.
For guys, get clip on extensions or wear barrettes. If heels aren’t your thing, try wearing girly looking flip flops or flats. You can also wear a purse and lots of jewelry.
Thursday -Celebrity/ Character Day
This day is a smorgasbord of options. Celebrities and characters come in all shape and sizes and all different kinds of outfits.
If you want to be instantly recognized, go for famous characters, like Harry Potter, or really wacky looking ones, like Dr. Seuss. The same goes for celebrities.
Friday- Spirit Day
This day is reserved solely for going out and wearing your class colors. Spray paint your hair, makeup, belts, just about anything goes! Just go out and have fun!
