France Makes History for Abortion Rights

By Tiffany Perera

On March 4, 2024, France became the world’s first country to embed abortion rights into its constitution, marking a historic victory for reproductive rights advocates worldwide. The move, which follows in the wake of the US Supreme Court’s controversial decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, underscores France’s commitment to safeguarding women’s autonomy over their bodies.

The decision, passed with resounding support from both chambers of the French Parliament, signifies a significant milestone in the ongoing battle for reproductive rights.

By a majority of 780 to 72, lawmakers ratified the amendment, solidifying the principle of “guaranteed freedom” to abortion within the French legal framework. The amendment’s passage follows earlier approvals by the French Senate and National Assembly, demonstrating broad bipartisan consensus on the issue.

While some critics argued for stronger language explicitly defining abortion as an inherent “right,” proponents of the amendment contend that its adoption sends a powerful message of solidarity and support for reproductive rights. France’s decisive action sets a precedent for proactive legislative measures to safeguard women’s health and autonomy.

The symbolic significance of the amendment’s passage was emphasized by the illumination of the Eiffel Tower with the phrase “my body my choice” in the aftermath of the vote.

The implications of France’s decision offers inspiration and hope to advocates fighting for reproductive rights worldwide. By protecting abortion rights in its constitution, France sets a precedent for other nations to follow, that every individual should have the right to make decisions about their own body free from coercion or interference.

As the fight for reproductive rights continues, France’s step serves as a representation of progress and the power of collective action in advancing gender equality and human rights. With the adoption of this amendment, France reaffirms its commitment to upholding the principles of reproductive rights, including access to safe and legal abortions for all individuals.
