On February 11, 2024, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers came head to head with each other, competing for this year’s Super Bowl championship. After their first championship against each other in 2020, football fans were eager to see the two come together and rematch. The game between the two teams brought in an average of 123.4 million viewers on CBS, making it the highest number of people watching the same broadcast in television history.
The initial Super Bowl held in Las Vegas started as a rather dull game until the exciting exchanges of the fourth quarter and overtime ensued. This matchup marked only the second instance out of 58 Super Bowls where the game ended in a tie after regular play, and notably, it was the inaugural game played under updated overtime regulations guaranteeing both teams possession of the ball.
In overtime, the Chiefs were winning 22-19, following Jake Moody’s 27-yard field goal. Patrick Mahomes performed a remarkable comeback reminiscent of their showdown four years prior. Mahomes’ crucial 8-yard sprint on fourth-and-1 sustained the Chiefs’ drive, followed by a 19-yard dash that positioned them for the winning play. With just under fifteen minutes left in overtime, Mahomes connected with an open Hardman, prompting celebration from the entire Chiefs team as red-and-yellow confetti rained onto the field.
Throughout the years of football, The Kansas City Chiefs have cemented themselves as the next dynasty in the NFL. As they defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22, in overtime of the Super Bowl, they were made back-to-back champions winning their third title in five seasons. This is the first time this has happened since the New England Patriots who won back-to-back Super Bowls back in the 2003-2004 season, and it’s the ninth time in history it’s been achieved.
“This is awesome. This is legendary,” game MVP Patrick Mahomes said to CBS News after the win.
