2023’s Top Games of the Year

As 2023 draws to a close, it’s time to honor and acknowledge the best games it has delivered. GamersRadar, a worldwide entertainment site for video game related news, movies, and reviews, is created for diagnostic data to categorize every game to its viewers. They have revealed the list of the top five games that have taken the spotlight in 2023 and how they have captivated audiences and left an indelible mark on the gaming landscape.

Beginning with the number five spot, there is “Cocoon,” which was developed by Geometric Interactive. Cocoon presents an incredibly intelligent and creatively ingenious adventure, challenging players to stack diverse and small “alien worlds” that they explore on top of each other. It stands out as one of this generation’s finest puzzle games, marking an exceptional debut to deliver an unforgettable, dreamlike journey.

Next, fourth place is  “Marvel’s Spider Man 2” which was developed by Insomniac games. This sequel in the Spider-Man series is expected to continue the adventures of Peter Parker as Spider-Man, introducing new villains and expanding the open-world gameplay that made the first game successful. Players swing through New York City, combat foes, and uncover a compelling storyline.

“I believe that ‘Marvel’s Spider Man 2’ should’ve been higher, the game has great graphics and Spiderman is the best superhero and the game is able to reflect that,” said sophomore Joan Lazo.

Third place is “The Legend of Zelda: Tears Of the Kingdom” which was developed by Nintendo. This game is able to feature the innovative Ultrahand building mechanic akin to effortless Lego construction, it empowers players to craft anything from bridges to airborne assailants. The game brings a feeling of conquest as the game equips you with tools to dominate the land.

Second place is “Alan Wake 2” was developed by Remedy Entertainment. This is a psychological horror game that follows the character who is a writer named Alan Wake. The creators were able to gain most of their inspiration from best seller author Stephen King by the form of his own writing in his books. The game is likely to continue Alan Wake’s  journey, battling dark forces while navigating a captivating storyline.

Finally, first place is taken by “Baldur’s Gate 3,” developed by  Larian Studios in partnership with Wizard of the Coast. This is a role-playing video game set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Players create characters, explore various locations, engage in combat, and make choices that affect the storyline. It’s known for its deep narrative and intricate gameplay mechanics.

With this list, some students at MLEC have some disagreements and have expressed their thoughts on how it should have been made.

“The order feels incorrect, ‘Marvel’s Spider Man 2’ should’ve been first and then Tears of [The] Kingdom, Baldur’s Gate [3], Alan Wake [2], and finally Cocoon. [Marvel’s] Spider Man [2] should’ve taken first place just by the representation of Venom alone,” said sophomore Ernesto Sanchez.

Despite some disagreements on the list, securing the spot in the top five games globally is no small feat, indicating that all these games truly deserve their ranking as the top five games of 2023. As 2023 comes to a close, we wonder what the new year ahead will bring for video games and which ones will come out on top at the end.
