Ten years after the initial release of the widely known video game Grand Theft Auto 5, the latest installation of the game series was finally revealed in a brand new trailer. With the release of this video game being anticipated sometime in 2025, Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to be a huge leap for the gaming community in terms of graphics, attention to detail, and gameplay.
The new video game is to be set in Vice City, the GTA equivalent of Miami, Florida. This location was previously explored in 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and that game’s 2006 prequel Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. While these video game entries were set during the mid-1980s, the new GTA 6 is reported to tell a modern-day, Bonnie and Clyde-inspired story featuring two leads named Jason and Lucia. Lucia will be the GTA series’ first female playable protagonist in a mainline game.
In a 12-minute YouTube video, Mike York, former animator at Rockstar New England, spoke about Grand Theft Auto 6, relishing over how impressive the game trailer looks.
“I’m really impressed with how far they’re bringing the graphics for an in-game kind of version of this. A lot of times you see cinematics used, this is not that. When you play this game, it’s gonna look like this,” said York.
The GTA publisher announced that Grand Theft Auto 6 will release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in 2025. A PC version has not yet been announced. However, that is not uncommon for the Grand Theft Auto games as the series has had staggered releases on consoles and PCs. Another potential platform that could be home to Grand Theft Auto 6 is the Nintendo Switch. Rockstar has embraced the Switch with releases like L.A. Noire, Red Dead Redemption, and Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy: The Definitive Edition, therefore, a release for GTA 6 on the Switch would not be unlikely.
The first official trailer has already wowed the gaming community and became one of the most-watched videos on YouTube, breaking multiple records. In just 24 hours, the first trailer reached 100 million views on YouTube, a view rate exceeded only by K-pop boy band BTS. Guinness World Records has named it the most-watched video game trailer and non-music video ever in the same time frame. Hardcore fans are eagerly waiting for Rockstar Games to release the final game as soon as possible.
