Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, paid his third visit in two days to areas that have felt the force of the war with Russia on Thursday, March 23, visiting the retaken southern Kherson region. A senior Ukraine commander has hinted at a Ukrainian counteroffensive coming soon. This counteroffensive would help defend the areas struggling from Russia’s attacks.
Last year, Ukraine launched counter-offensives in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Kalakliya, and Kupiansk, which proved to be major turning points in the war, allowing Ukraine to reclaim significant territory.
Russian forces have been digging in the four provinces that Moscow illegally annexed in September — Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia. Putin has clarified that he wants to be in complete control there.
Zelenskyy has urged European leaders to increase and speed up the delivery of weapons and ammunition to Ukraine for use in its campaign to oppose the Russian invasion. The European leaders have signed a $2 billion agreement, which was endorsed earlier this week by EU foreign and defense ministers.
The agreement calls for sending ammunition from existing stocks as well as EU countries working together to place new orders for more rounds. Ukraine is now receiving modern weapons, including tanks, from its Western allies, who are also training Ukrainian troops on how to use them.
“We will restore everything; we will rebuild everything. Just like with every city and village that suffered because of the occupiers,” says Zelenskyy.
