Every great presidency requires a strong, passionate leader with set skills to provide everything the people need. The president is an emblem. Those looking for an example look to their leader for guidance.
“I really want to incorporate myself and be one with the class. I want them to know that they can count on me” says Juan Torres, Class of 2018 President. However, actions speak louder than words. His actions show none.
Lately, Torres is gaining a terrible reputation for not being there when his peers needs him the most. The class is left to fend for themselves to try to make their class as eventful as it can be.
Homecoming week brought out the classes creativity– and the lack of leadership – during the hallway competition. As they came together to decorate their colorful hallways, the freshman class were left alone without their leader, their image, to build the city of Candyland.
The remaining Class of 2018 officers took up Torres’s position as their fellow peers expected him to come and help guide his people. “The only person that wasn’t available and helping out was the President,” said one of his fellow freshman classmates.
A lack of sponsorship adds to the freshman’s disorganization during competition. Finding a sponsor is a difficult task, but it is rare of a class to be sponsorship already this far long into the year. Should the President be on top of what is going on and find a sponsor for his class?
“He didn’t felt like going…SGA Officers started yelling and reprimanding him, telling him that he has to ‘start doing his work or he will pay the consequences.’”
These consequences, as many won’t believe, are highly unlikely to execute. According to SGA Rules and Regulations, an Officer can only be removed from office if there is a fall out academically. “They just have to work around him,” says Mr. Moffi, SGA Club Sponsor. “There is not much left to do.”
The people have spoken. Opinions have been given. Action can’t be taken.
A president must stay to lead his people, even when he doesn’t show passion for his job. It was the people that elected Juan Torres, and now they must wait and see if their despised spearhead would ever show love for what he does.
“The Secretary takes time out of her day to stay for the class meetings. She misses the bus and has to walk all the way from here to the Moors,” says a Class of 2018 officer.“That’s dedication. The President shows none.”
