Officer Injured In Shooting Near American Senior High School

On Monday, December 5th, 2022, a 34-year-old Miami Dade robbery intervention detail officer was injured in a shooting around Northwest 186th Street and 67th Avenue.

An unidentified Miami Dade officer was in his car, carrying out surveillance on a stolen vehicle that was said to be involved in a carjacking.

As he was observing the car, the suspect began driving around the officer and proceeded to shoot him from his vehicle. The officer was moving towards the suspect and called the shooting over his police radio.

He ended up getting shot in the face, with a bullet fragment wedged inside his cheek.

Resources were able to come to him and he was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center for medical attention. He survived the injury and left the hospital early Monday evening in good condition.

Due to the shooting, many roads were blocked which resulted in increased traffic and delayed busses’ dropoff schedules. Some of our students here at MLEC were in those buses for about two hours as well.

“I was stuck on the bus for three hours and had to pee really bad. Traffic was slow and redirected so I didn’t get dropped off till dusk,” said sophomore, Joshua Easterling.

Not all students were as disturbed by this as others though.

“It worked out for me because I’m usually the second to last stop and since the first stop is American where the incident happened, the driver had to re-route and ended up dropping me first. It still took until 3:30 for me to get home which was is my usual time,” said junior, Alice Tansini.
