NMIXX Makes A Comeback— Literally

By Sophia Garcia

After their debut in February of 2022, there was an air of uncertainty around JYP’s new girl group, NMIXX. Many were unsure of what to make of the song’s format and the execution of the member’s vocal abilities as previously showcased through covers. The group’s most recent release, an extended play record by the name ENTWURF, resolves the issues present in the debut.

NMIXX, coming from a well-known company such as JYP, has more freedom when it comes to making experimental songs; the group is able to explore music styles freely, whereas idols from unknown entertainment companies are more likely to play it safe to ensure streams.

This experimentality expressed in NMIXX’s debut confused many, causing mixed reactions upon release. As time went on, some went on to see the songs in a different light, but it was not marketable for the general public.

ENTWURF solves these problems. Upon first listen, the songs are interesting and highlight each member’s vocal abilities in ways that were previously neglected. There is no confusion about structure or the development of the song.

The EP’s title track, ‘DICE,’ is a pleasant evolution from the group’s previous title track. It has the experimental flare of a beat drop and tempo switch in the middle of the song but still holds true to the more ‘normal’ K-pop style, taking influence from traditional Latin music.

The genre blend of traditional Latin music in the form of trumpets and other wind instruments and a theatrical use of percussion and synths combine to make a pleasant listening experience. The one thing left to be desired is a better use of the rapper’s raspier vocal tones in the verses.

The EP’s side track, ‘COOL (Your rainbow)’ is a much more enjoyable experience even upon first listen. Each member’s vocal tone is exceptionally utilized, most notably Lily. Her delivery can be strained at times, but this B-side allows for her to showcase the true capabilities of her voice, even though the song is a much calmer tone than what the group is used to delivering.

NMIXX has successfully made a comeback from the confusing image they’d left the K-pop community with. If their upward trend of marketing towards a larger audience while still keeping the breath of experimentalism that distinguishes them from the rest of the K-pop scene continues, this group may have a great future in store.
