What Does Dancing Mean to the Kit Kats?

By Sofia Palomino

Dancing is a form of art and expression. All throughout the world, various styles of dance have brought different communities together; the Kit Kats are one of MLEC’s dance teams.

The Kit Kats express themselves and their culture with their performances throughout the year. They channel emotions to create an impactful and moving choreography that marks each school event and many dancers use it to let go and showcase their personality.

“When I dance I feel like I am free and nothing else matters,” said Taniya Dandy, the Captain of the Kit Kats.

The team uses dance to interact with the school community and forge strong connections. The meaning behind a performance is often much greater than words can express. The combination of moves and emotions tell a unique story.

“In ninth grade, in the black history show, the dance was very emotional and heartwarming. To this day I look back at it and it was so beautiful,” continued Dandy.

Some people use dance as an outlet for creativity and a way to use their energy, feelings, and ideas. Dance is a form of communication that includes different types of intertwined techniques, but at its core dance allows people to show a part of themselves. When the Kit Kats have a lot on their plate, they turn to dance as a way to escape from reality.

“All of the energy that is stored in me comes out when I am dancing,” said Jontrell Nesmith, a new member of the Kit Kats.

Dance can be used as a way to calm people down and many dancers also use it to achieve a peaceful state of mind.

“Dancing is a way I can take my mind off things like stressful homework and I put my style into the way I dance,” said Co-Captain Genicha Jean-Baptiste.

Dance can be different things, from expression to a form of entertainment, but at its foundation, it acts as a creative outlet.

“My story is the way I dance,” said Jean-Baptiste.
