Ms. Lewis: MLEC’s Beloved Security Guard Retires

By Sofia Palomino

From the busy cafeteria lines to the colorful courtyard, Ms. Geraldine Lewis has roamed the halls of MLEC as a security guard since the school first opened. Now, she is retiring to move on to a new journey. For the past 22 years, she has created a safe environment for the hundreds of students that have passed through MLEC’s doors.

Ms. Lewis was an exemplary security guard and took her job to heart, whether it was controlling the lunch lines or patrolling the halls. She was always looking out for those around her and her personality has helped her befriend countless students and staff members throughout her years at the school.

“I admire her wisdom and her work ethic, she really helped me and taught me a lot of things in Student Services and about security,” Ms. Coleman, a security guard at MLEC said.

Ms. Coleman is one of the many people that was influenced by Ms. Lewis. They worked together for 12 years and became very close friends whilst creating a safe space for students during all times of the school day.

Missing a day of work was certainly not something in Ms. Lewis’ mind; she would arrive early every morning to make sure the beginning of school started smoothly. She was a very dedicated individual, always meeting her responsibilities and helping out the students around campus.

“The students are my family, that’s why I get up and come every day, and I enjoy coming every day,” Ms. Lewis said.

“While she was strict at times, teenagers can be a handful. On the other hand, she was kind and was very helpful blowing the whistle last year when it was time to go to class. That kept me from being late. She kept all of us safe and protected by always asking for our IDs,” Sophomore Isabella Fernandez said of her experience with Ms. Lewis.

She has been caring for students for the past few years and is now looking forward to changing up her routine during her retirement. Ms. Lewis plans on traveling to Dubai and Hawaii, amongst other places. She hopes to spend time with her family, specifically her grandkids, and to stay active by exercising every day.

Ms. Lewis was a dependable coworker, a hardworking security guard, and a loving person that left her unique mark on MLEC.

“She put the students first before she put herself, that’s her legacy,” Ms. Coleman said.
