Sprawled out in the 90° Miami heat, students of all grade levels, teachers, staff, and administration gathered around the courtyard to watch the first big event of the year, Jaguars Rock It Out.
The event included many battles between the classes, allowing students to interact outside of the classroom. It also allowed for more competitiveness between students.
“That’s why we kind of started this battle of the classes, clubs, and academies this year, to bring on that competitive spirit,” said Activity Director Mrs. Cordova.
Students participated in the hula hoop competition, the egg walk, and the sack race, among other activities. The performances from the Jagettes, Kit Kats, and the Hispanic Heritage Club’s new dance team, Flow Latino, received a big applause from onlookers.
Events like this one weren’t possible at the school the last few years because of COVID-19, but now the school is ready to make up for all those missed events.
“We’ve done a complete 180. If you think about a couple of years ago we weren’t able to celebrate graduation,” mentioned Principal Yaset Fernandez. “To see these activities brought back is phenomenal.”
While the freshmen were getting their first look at the types of activities MLEC offers, so was Mr. Galarce, the new Magnet Lead.
“I’m excited, just seeing everybody kind of in that school spirit, I really want to run out there, see what it looks like,” said Galarce.
He, like many students at the school, are looking forward to the other events planned out for the school year.
Sophomore Leavesther Francois adds that, “they should do more events like this because it includes everybody coming together like a family — like a team— and doing what they do best.”
