Sunday March 27th, the 2022 Oscars (aka the 94th Academy Awards) aired live. Once again, showcasing the best films and actors of the past year, the award ceremony was full of surprises.

As it is customary the Oscars night began with the red carpet which was full of the bling and shining colors of the nominees. Then the first awards were given out in a non-televised ceremony, these were the awards for: Sound, Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Production Design and Documentary Short, Animated Short and Live Action Short.

This year the Academy Awards had three hosts, Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall who were the first people to host it since Jimmy Kimmel in 2018.

The Oscars had a variety of performances all throughout. Opening the show was Beyonce who performed the song “Be Alive” from “King Richard”. Later the show followed with a performance of Encanto’s “Dos Orugitas” by Sebastian Yatra and “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” sung by Luis Fonsi, Becky G, and Megan Thee Stallion.  Towards the end came a performance by Billie Eilish and Finneas who became winners of the night with their nominated song “No Time To Die”.

This year there were a group of record-breaking awards.  Ariana DeBose who won best supporting actress for her role in West Side Story, becoming the first black queer woman to win an Oscar. Troy Kotsur won best supporting actor for his role in “CODA”, becoming the first deaf actor to ever win an Oscar. Jane Campion won the Academy Award for best director making her the first woman to be nominated for the awards twice and making this the first time the awards has gone to a woman back-to-back.

The award for best International Feature went to “Drive My Car,” Japan. The winner for best Costume Design was the movie “Cruella”. The award for Original Screenplay then went to Belfast and the award for Adapted Screenplay went to CODA. Then Encanto won best animated feature. Dune took many awards home, Visual Effects, Editing, Cinematography, and Score were all taken home for this film.

However, before the big winners of the night were announced, the show faced a moment of upheaval as Will Smith went up to the stage to smack Chris Rock after the latter joked about Smith’s wife and her hair. The act was then followed by some cursing that was blurred out on U.S. television.

“Keep my wife’s name out your fucking mouth,” said actor Will Smith.

Following the shocking event, Will Smith proceeded to win best Actor for his role in “King Richard”.  Then the award for best actress went to Jessica Chastain, “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”.

Lastly, the night’s big winner, CODA, won the award for best picture putting a wrap to the Oscars.
