After an anxious return to school, test after test, and the other stressors that come with being a teenager, one thing is certain: MLEC students have been counting down to the long-awaited winter break.
The festivities are right around the corner and the students begin to prepare for their well-deserved two weeks off. Those few weeks can be stretched into numerous possibilities including a chance to relax.
Some students will be running to catch a flight while others will find themselves in traffic on the way to their events, or catching up on the latest releases. Either way, the students of MLEC will be engaging in different activities to close out the year and ring in the new one.
Traveling is very exciting and even more so when it’s during the holidays. Some students take advantage of the long break to spend time with family here and abroad.
“Over the break I’m going to Michigan to visit my family for Christmas. I’ve never been to Michigan so it’s going to be my first time,” said Anagisela Davila, a junior at MLEC.
There are other students that regularly travel during winter break, whether it be a tradition to explore someplace new or visit the same destination.
“I usually go to Chicago during winter break, I used to live there and my brother still lives there. The only thing that is going to be different this winter break is that I’m going on a cruise to the Bahamas,” commented Yaila Garcia, a sophomore in the Health Academy.
While traveling is one of the most favored activities, there are students that have other ways to spend the break and celebrate the holidays.
“Winter activities” are usually the staple for this time of the year, though these are more of an overstatement in Miami. Yet, there are still some things that provide the same cold and cozy feeling usually associated with the season. Ice skating is one of the more popular activities and while it is indoors, there is still the assurance of a pleasant experience with the cool temperature and hot cocoa that follows to warm you back up.
There are people that have a more relaxing break and focus on activities nearby and around the house. Hallmark movies on deck or new Netflix/HBO Max/ Hulu releases are the plan for many students to help alleviate pent-up stress from the school year.
“I just want to stay home, celebrate Christmas, and then celebrate my birthday a few days after Christmas. I’m probably going to get my hair done and fix my nails the day before to spend the day with my mom,” said Stenica Simon, a sophomore at MLEC.
Winter break is only two weeks but the students of MLEC make good use of their time participating in things that interest them or plans they’ve made.
