An Evening With Silk Sonic, the highly anticipated debut album by R&B duo Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak as Silk Sonic, was released on Friday.
In March 2021, the duo released their first single, Leave the Door Open, which was performed at the Grammys and topped the Billboard Hot 100 in April. Skate, the duo’s next single, was released in the summer, followed by Smokin’ Out the Window just a week before the album’s release on November 5th.
The album contains only nine tracks that transport listeners back to the height of R&B music in the 1970s. Mars and both. Paak complement each other beautifully while illustrating the simple yet powerful impact that a friendship or relationship can have on one.
Despite having a short tracklist, all nine songs are written and produced to the best of Mars and .Paak’s ability, making ranking each track extremely difficult.
With that said, here are my rankings within An Evening With Silk Sonic:
9. Silk Sonic Intro
8. Blast Off
7. Leave The Door Open
6. Skate
5. Smokin Out The Window
4. After Last Night
3. 777
2. Put On A Smile
1. Fly As Me
Silk Sonic Intro, at number nine, sets up the album like no other, containing bits of R&B groove with funk and guest host–Bootsy Collins as the album’s narrator. “Who y’all came to see tonight? Who gon get the ladies feeling something? (Who)” say Mars and .Paak. I honestly wish the first verse of this intro had been turned into a track because it serves as a call to the album as a whole.
Third place goes to the high-energy, .Paak led “777.” This song feeds off the adrenaline that being in a Las Vegas casino provides. “Pretty motherf*cker with some money to blow, I’m ’bout to buy Las Vegas after this roll, I’m ’bout to buy Las Vegas after this roll, Come on, 7-7-7, let’s go” The rap-funk vibe that pervades this track is also present in the top-ranked song, Fly As Me.
Fly As Me is a self–loving, self–confident, and inspiring song that puts you in the right and healthy frame of mind. “I deserve to be, With somebody as fly as me, Somebody this fly, And you deserve to be seen, With somebody as fly as me,” Mars and .Paak sing. The lyrics, like every other song on the album, are superbly written and complement the Silk Sonic duo’s vocals.
From beginning to end, every song on the album brings a light, yet sincere smile to the face, and while nothing is perfect, this may be as close as we can get.
An Evening With Silk Sonic, which provides a 70’s R&B, rap funk feel that is a blessing to our ears, stands out from the music that dominates the charts these days. Bruno Mars and Anderson. Paak outdid themselves, leaving fans wanting more. After only a few days of listening to it, claiming it as album of the year may not be so far-fetched after all.
