With the start of school in the fall, it’s that time of year when students go school supply shopping. And, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the global supply chain, school supplies are a little more expensive than usual.
Nonetheless, here are some pointers to help you get everything you need for the school year without breaking the bank.
Shop Online
If you have a school supply list, it may be more convenient to shop online and add each item to your cart as you go. Stores may also have sales or coupons that are only available on their website. If you’re looking to save money, it’s best to shop for basic supplies online and select the option to pick up in-store; this method is not only cheaper, but also more efficient.
Don’t “Overbuy” on Technology
Most schools provide students with tablets or computers to use throughout the school year; if this is not the case, students have access to a computer lab or media center. Avoid spending a lot of money on devices that you may not need. To save money, use your school’s electronic tools, or choose a Chromebook or tablet over a more expensive computer setup.
Reuse Materials from the Previous Year
Many students gravitate toward the brand-new items in the store, such as the brightly colored calligraphy pens or the super stylish folders, but there’s nothing wrong with reusing old school supplies, and you’ll definitely save a buck or two.
Instead of shopping for items you already own, simply repurpose them. Empty your book-bag from last year. Wash the pencil pouch that has a little dirt on it. Decorate your old binder. Reusing old school supplies not only saves money, but they can also look completely brand new with a little washing and customization.
Take Advantage of the Tax-Free Weekend and Community Events
Most states have one tax-free weekend in August, when you can buy back-to-school supplies and clothes and save between 3% and 7% on state sales taxes. Back-to-school sales tax holidays are in effect in Florida from July 31st to August 9th. Use this tax-free period to save money on all of your necessary school supplies.
If you live in Florida, you can also attend this free community event on August 7th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Women’s Club of Homestead (17905 S.W. 292nd ST. Homestead, FL 33030), where you can get free backpacks and school supplies, free food, and enter to win raffle prizes. For more information, click here.
Keep an Eye Out for Future Sales
If you happen to miss your state’s tax-free period, there is still time to cash in on future sales. Stores such as Staples and Walmart will begin stocking school supplies as early as July 1st, and school supply sales will typically last through Labor Day Weekend.
By September, especially after Labor Day, stores want to get rid of unsold school supplies rather than store or ship them back to warehouses, so they will price them to sell. Smart shoppers can stock up in September and store it for later use.
