After nearly a year and a half of lockdowns, cancelled activities and distance learning, the class of 2021 will get to celebrate one more milestone in person — graduation.
Every high school senior will have a chance to walk across the stage in full graduation regalia, with pomp and circumstance.
“Health & safety protocols will be presented to the Medical & Health Task Force for input,” Superintendent Carvalho announced in a Tweet. “Final schedule and protocols will be provided to all high schools for dissemination to students and families shortly thereafter.”
The plans presented to the MDCPS school board maintains that graduates and dignitaries must follow safety protocols, including masks and social distancing. Diplomas will not be distributed at the graduation venue, there will be no handshakes, and only two ticketed guests will be permitted per graduate.
This way this school year unraveled was not anticipated, but a number of Jaguars expressed delight in having this culminating event to look forward to.
“This year is not what I dreamed the moment I became an officer,” Class Officer Karen M. Laverde said. “All about our senior year wasn’t normal, but just knowing I can [finish it off] by walking on a stage with the people I spend the past 4 years with, gives it a nostalgic, but cheerful feeling,” Laverde continued.
High school lasts for only four years — but memories remain for a lifetime. Behind a screen since 2020, seniors will eventually reunite with the people they have spent these last four years making memories with.
Adjusting to the challenges that followed with COVID-19 was not an easy feat. Still, the class of 2021 came forth with resilience and reaped the fruits of their labor.
“I am very eager to take that time to have one last hurrah with all of my class members. I anticipate seeing everybody walk across the stage and get recognition for being amazing Jaguars. Although a lot is still in question, we are moving in the right direction,” Senior Class Officer Raymond J. Hung said.
Others are especially looking forward to seeing their fellow class and officers of the Student Government Association (SGA), the people who have guided them through the school year and worked hard to lead them on a road to greatness.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the whole class all together and to be seated on the stage next to the other SGA officers,” Caitlyn Ramirez, a senior and friend of the SGA officers at MLEC, said.
The faculty of MLEC expressed fulfillment upon news that the upcoming graduation will be held in person, an effort that students and staff alike have said to be rewarding.
“There is nothing more that I wanted than to have a physical graduation,” MLEC Activities Director Mrs. Helena Castro said.
Although this year has had its ups and downs, the seniors class can finally harvest the triumphs for their hard work and perseverance.
